Useful antiques

I collect antiques... furniture mostly. But it must have a function, not just sit around gathering dust. I have a 100 year old steamer trunk that holds blankets and holiday decorations, and a 150 year old sideboard that holds my china and tablelinens. I have a 50 year old child's doll dresser that holds all my buttons and such. And I have a 150 year old pie keeper that I am repairing, that will hold my glassware.

I hope someday that my children and friends consider me to be a useful antique. That my advice was sound and my comments were useful. That their memories of me are happy and fun. That they remember that pain never overcame me. That I didn't die when I was supposed to, that I went kicking and screaming into that good night.

We are laying to rest a cherished family member today, just as we did last Saturday. It's been a rough month.

I've been there recently, too. I'm painfully aware that no consolation given is ever adequate. Never-the-less, please accept my condolences.
