I take this mantle. You pray...God listens...then decides how to answer if He answers at all...you are left to determine whether what happened as a result of the prayer is because of God listening to your prayers or coincidence or what.

Ultimately, I too think, as I assume you do, not much will be different. I suppose we can conclude God isn't really there or listening, or that God is there and listening and will address the prayers the same. And there are other possibilities.

You say a prayer and do not get what you prayed for = God has something better in store
You do not say a prayer and get what you want = coincidence
You do not say a prayer and do not get what you want = you should say a prayer
