The latest Mormon Expression has a podcast on the history of some of the online boards of Mormonism including this one. Participating is the one and only Dr. Shades:

Listening now. I'm really disappointed that I wasn't able to be there to contribute. :(

I was just thinking you (with your participation on some of those old boards) would be a great addition to the panel.

Morning John,
Just finished listening to it (interesting).
In addition to the things y'all talked about in the podcast, I think that these boards/forums have created a place for the many, many folks like me (Never Mo's that used to have very little/no understanding/perspective/knowledge concerning Mormonism) to get a decent taste directly from those who have, or currently do, lived/live it (There is no better place to draw from than that, in my opinion)
Simply put, I believe that these boards have played a big role in bringing Mormonism to many who (without the boards) may have never had it in their sight (I didn't even know what a Mormon was 6 years ago). And the best part, in my opinion, is that it is delivered to us by the very ones who carry it (or used to carry it). Without question, this is a unique and most valuable source for people like me to digest, consider, weigh, and understand when reading the contribution of, and or engaging with the people on these boards.
Anyhooo, cool podcast!
Peace,
Ceeboo

For what it's worth, I posted a small response on my blog.

Excellent podcast, John. Love the little thing about the BPD (?) people making fools of themselves.

Board history:
After listening to this podcast I'm interested in starting a list to organize the boards a bit with start date and various incarnations:
Mormon Discussions Board (Oct 2006) (earlier incarnation?)
FAIR (Nov 2003 at min.) ~> MAD (late 2006) ~> MDD (spring 2011)
Recovery from Mormonism (November 1995)
Zion Lighthouse Message Board (late 2000)
Exmormon Forums (exmormonforums.com) (early 2008)
FLAK (thefoyer.org) (August 2006) (earlier incarnation?)
New Order Mormon (Nov 2007) (earlier incarnation?)
Post Mormon (late 2006)
That's all I got for now. I think you can trace the heyday of ZLMB from about late 2000-2003 and then the beginning of the jump to FAIR/MAD/MDD in late 2003 with a lot of the switch happening in 2004. ZLMB didn't end immediately but seemed to have petered off around 2005-6. At that point the archives really slow down.
