A New Low for Mormon Apologists: Copyright Warfare

Post by _Everybody Wang Chung »

From Infymus at http://mormoncurtain.com/:

Infymus wrote:This morning I received a threatening email from a person calling himself "Mahonri Moriancumer" that he would be bringing legal action against me for material posted on the Mormon Curtain. Obviously Mahonri - who I banned from the Ex-Mormon Forums - is now pushing it to a new level of website policing.

So, are you the person to contact on mormoncurtain.com issues? The legal agent for service of process? Let me know so I can prepare for future activity concerning the site. Defending it can be very expensive, especially when the person who challenges your use has the backing of unlimited lawyers, funds and/or time on their hands and a legal background.

The email was sent to my personal, undisclosed email account and not my email account for the Mormon Curtain. Only limited persons have this email so I know that it came off the Apologetic L-Skinny list that contains people such as Daniel C. Peterson of BYU, Stan Barker of SHIELDS and several other apologists from the Neal Maxwell Institute and other fringe apologetic organizations.

I have contacted my attorney and a couple of very close Ex-Mormon friends who are attorneys. For the moment there will be some reorganization of material on the Mormon Curtain. For the moment, the Mormon Curtain is being reorganized under the direction of legal counsel. You may notice some pages are missing while they are being reformatted.

I am fully prepared to challenge anyone who brings copyright claims against the Mormon Curtain. I am also prepared to sue to the fullest extent possible should the claim be unjustified.

This is very unfortunate. As this same thing has happened here, we need to do all we can to prevent this type of behavior.

Infymus, let me know if I can help.

Wowzers...so only Peterson, Barker and other NMI folks, including "fringe apologetic orgs" have his personal email? That's funny how he tricked them.

I will give only these folks my email account so when they send me something mean I'll know just who it is. Not a bad plan if'n you needed to know who's threatening legal action.

Wasn't Mahonri Moriancumer the code-name of the guy that did The Church Is Not True podcast with Mike Norton?

He wasn't/isn't exactly an apologist...

Doesn't Mahonri Moriancumer post as Joseph here? I thought I heard someone say that during the bored war.

That might be the same "Mahonri" who posted on exmormonforums and who is supposedly brother to our very own copyright enthusiast, Joseph.

Yeah, I thought this idiot was "Joseph's" brother or something.

Good job for banning him.

Now if only someone would permanently ban "Joseph." It's been so nice having him gone for a week!

Paranoia fuels this foolishness. The guy would not change things if all was being done right in the first place.

The only ones with anything to worry about are those posting images that are the intellectual property of others without permission and/or without a 'fair use' exception in copyright laws.

Plenty of images in the public domain, royalty free and privately owned available that you don't have to steal some to make your point or illustrate your belief.

There is no 'copyright warfare', there is just a few who got caught using the property of other illegally.

Given this nuts overreaction, he probably has reason to be afraid. No one cries louder than those in fear of getting caught.

I see that I'm being accused, as I commonly am here (though virtually nowhere else), of mean, unethical, and spiteful behavior.

I have nothing to do with this, assuming it's even real -- unless I did it in my sleep or in a trance (which should not be altogether discounted, of course, since my viciousness is infinite).

Nor have I heard anybody else mention anything of the sort. In fact, I don't recall "Infymus" coming up on Skinny or in any other place that I frequent (virtual or real) for many months if not years. (He's never figured at all prominently in my circles; it's possible that only two of us on Skinny would even recognize the name.)

Skinny has been active over the past few days, but only with chatter about Mormonism in the current Republican presidential campaign, a joke about Martin Heidegger, reactions to a prominent Mormon speaker, and notes from one list member's current travels in the UK.

Oh, boo hoo. Is there no end to your sense of personal persecution?

He didn't accuse you specifically. Read it carefully. He said you were on a list. That allows for plausible deniability.

It never ceases to amaze me that there are people who actually take you seriously.
