The way sins are rated

Post by _just me »

I was just thinking today that whenever people list the host of sins that apostates must of course fall in to we never see gambling listed.

I am actually hard pressed to think of much talk of gambling at all in recent years in classes or from pulpits and on the forums.

So, it seems that gambling is not such a big deal. Getting inked or drinking coffee must rank worse since we see those thrown around a lot.

Where does gambling rank? Is it even on the radar? Personally, it seems like a gambling addiction would be just as devestating as a porn addiciton. Do you guys hear much about gambling? Maybe those in Sin City?

My faithful sister lived in the Reno area in the 80's. She nearly drove her family into bankruptcy because of her gambling habits, and she firmly declared herself an addict after getting help from friends in a support group.

The church did nothing about it. However, when she confessed to the sin next to murder, committed 20 years earlier as an unmarried teenager in the backseat of a car with no pregnancy or other fallout, she was rounded up for a church court of love and disfellowshipped for over a year.

The list of scary LDS sins goes like this (in order of super bad to a little naughty):
1. Porn
2. Beer
3. Coffee (and smoking but smoking is not very common these days in the U.S. - but it is in the same category as coffee)
4. Fuzzy handcuffs and such
5. Tattoos
6. Wearing a sleeveless dress
7. Lady Gaga
8. Wine
9. Gambling
10. Laughing at the mic behind the sacrament table
Oh for shame, how the mortals put the blame on us gods, for they say evils come from us, but it is they, rather, who by their own recklessness win sorrow beyond what is given... Zeus (1178 BC)

The Holy Sacrament.

You missed Skiing on Sunday. Back in my day it was 1. Murder, 2. Skiing on Sunday, 3. Coffee, Smoking, Alcohol

What are the sins which would result in excommunication?

Nice list. I don't agree. This is my interpretation of the sin rank system, one being the worst.

1. Stop believing in the LDS church
2. Porn
3. Gay Sex
4. Same Sex Marriage
5. Alcohol
6. Coffee
7. Masturbating
8. Tattoos and piercings
9. Pre Marital Sex (hetero)
10. Reading "anti-Mormon" literature

See, gambling didn't even make the top 10.

11. Not paying tithing
12. Child Abuse
13. Abortion
14. Being Inactive-Not keeping the Sunday Holy
15. Bikinis and tank tops
16. Victorias Secret (looking at the catalog is worse than wearing the stuff)
17. Not Home or Visiting Teaching
18. Gambling
19. Rated R movies
20. Tea
21. Failing to pray and read scriptures daily
22. Failing to hold family home evening

I didn't know where to put murder on the list. It really is assumed that people aren't going to do that. Obviously, it is seen as the worst thing you could do along with torture and rape and stuff.

Okay, wait: are we rating sins by how "bad" they are, or how fun they are?

Well, for example, there's hurting someone because you are being evil, and then there's hurting someone because they want you to.
