The Sunny Side of Porn

I don't bother with porn, but it seems like some people in the church are really obsessed with it. The way people talk about porn, it's this terrible scourge like the black plague or baby formula spiked with crack. This article may be a bit of a reality check:

The Sunny Side of Porn

From what I know, the cycle of guilt and shame over porn is what often drives the obsession, and research seems to confirm my belief.

"It turns out that among porn viewers, the amount of porn each subject consumed had nothing to do with his or her mental state. What mattered most, Twohig found, was whether the subjects tried to control their sexual thoughts and desires. The more they tried to clamp down on their urge for sex or porn, the more likely they were to consider their own pornography use a problem. The findings suggest that suppressing the desire to view pornography, for example, for moral or religious reasons, might actually strengthen the urge for it and exacerbate sexual problems. It’s all about “personal views and personal values,” Twohig says. In other words, the effects of pornography—positive or negative—have little to do with the medium itself and everything to do with the person viewing it."

I tried to tell that to Droopy, but he would have none of it.

Regular pornography use does not seem to encourage sexism, either. In 2007 Alan McKee, a cultural studies expert at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, designed a questionnaire to assess sexist tendencies. He enclosed his survey in shipments of pornographic material distributed by a mail-order company and also posted it online. Responses from 1,023 pornography users indicated that the amount of pornography the subjects consumed did not predict whether they would hold negative attitudes toward women. The survey respondents who were most sexist were generally older men who voted for a right-wing political party, lived in a rural area and had a lower level of formal education.

Drama alert. If you arent intersted in drama, please skip this. We recently found out from BIL that emails have been flying around between parents and siblings on my wife's side. And guess what? They have apparently concluded that we both (my wife and I) are addicted to porn! Love it! So funny.

I told my wife to write everyone this:

"Dear family,

Yes, you guessed right. We are indeed addicted to porn. Zee loves eyeing me down in the shower and I can't get enough of his sweaty pecs and thighs after his bike rides. We both look at the swimsuit section of Land's End catalogs whenever we get a chance. We also went to a Lady Gaga concert and Zee felt the Spirit there. I informed him that it was his crotch not the Spirit, but lo, he is beyond help.

Love your troubled children,

The Zees"

A good friend of mine was confronted by his father, who shoved a 5-page, handwritten rant about porn into his hands and basically called him to repentance. My friend asked his father why he was so concerned about pornography. "Well, that's why you left the church, isn't it?" Apparently, the family had been speculating on his reasons and had settled on "It must be porn."

This is what happens when you have a church that has become The Church of Anti-Porn.

That sounds about right: late 90s.
