Why Did Only Women See Jesus on Easter Morn?

Post by _consiglieri »

Last Sunday, we were talking about the resurrection of Jesus, and I offered it would be a shame to let this lesson go by without noting that, even with all the inconsistencies between the four gospel writers' accounts of the resurrection, they are unified on a couple of points; one of which being that Jesus was no longer in the tomb, and second that it was specifically women (or a woman) to whom Jesus either appeared, or who received the angelic proclamation that Jesus was risen.

After class, I privately told the teacher why I thought that might be the case . . .

. . . "How can there be a birth without a woman somewhere close by?"

Thoughts?

So there could be no question that a woman could be a special witness of Christ and apostle.

Brilliant, Just Me!

As soon as I had made this comment in Sunday school, the elderly TBM in the corner raised his hand and assured the class that it was because the women had the lowly obligation of preparing the body for burial that they were present first.

It was just a coincidence, due solely to the fact that women are subservient.

As if Jesus was just getting out of tomb and the women-folk stumbled upon him, catching him completely unawares.

The author of John goes further, having Mary show up at the tomb and it is empty, then she goes and gets Peter and John (?) who both go inside the tomb and see nothing, shrug their shoulders, and head home.

Mary stays and guess who shows up then?

It seems it didn't take long for the boys to pull the rug out from under those girls, did it?

It is interesting not only as a piece of New Testament studies, but also because we seem to see a similar transition occur in Mormonism.

More than interesting. I find it fascinating, if not a bit depressing.

But now the boys are in the catbird seat, and they're not giving up anything without a fight.

To forever end the crazy idea that women are inferior.

There is more there too. The faithless apostles didn't believe Jesus had risen when they were told. The women (including those who were not there) did.

And people still didn't get it. Women were often held in contempt. A few even believe them soulless (our own Darrick). No matter how hard you try to tell people something they will somehow assume the opposite. Scratch is an example of this kind of nonsense thinking.
