http://english.ruvr.ru/2011/07/06/52838999.htmlYep, the lady that did more damage to the LDS image than anyone I can think of (how many YouTube videos are out there showing her stuffing hot sauce in her son's mouth?) may have her day in court. What do you think should happen to her?
Here is the video:

I can only watch a small part of that video. Breaks my heart. Does she still have the child?
I don't know what a fair punishment would be. A fine? Forced classes in some sort of child rearing course? Psychiatric treatment?
This is a woman who must have experienced treatment like this when she was little. I don't think jail time would help her get beyond that.
She shouldn't be raising children.

Damn, I wish you hadn't posted this!
If I recall correctly, the mother claims that the child has attachment disorder. If that is so, it is fully consistent with the outcomes of numerous Russian adoptees.
What the mother needs is:
Parenting Education
Psychotherapy
Fine or incarceration for child abuse
Forcing children to ingest hot sauce as a form of punishment is fairly COMMON in the US. It can damage the child's body and I consider it a form of torture.
Parents who do this to their children have either had it done to them as children or it has been suggested to them by other parents as a quick fix for misbehavior.
What it does to the child is VIOLATE the child's BODY in exactly the same way that sexual assault violates the child's body only in this case it is violating the body by BURNING one of the most sensitive places of the body.
When an act violates the body of a child, it violates the MIND of the child. This is a child who with repeated acts of cruelty inflicted upon it learns to disassociate and if the child doesn't suffer attachment disorder going in, it sure as hell will learn to detach during this process.
Omg, don't get me started people!
I'm telling you, give me these parents and I will teach them the skills to appropriately and confidently guide their young children!

Seriously?
I have never heard of this. That's disgusting.

Yes, it is common and I have the time and experience to back that up.
It is beyond disgusting. It is a form of torture that can permanently damage the child physically and psychologically.
Imagine sticking a red hot poker down your throat.
That is exactly what it feels like to a child.
The only thing this form of punishment does is to teach the child to lie and lie at all costs.
Punishment and discipline are two very different concepts. The hot sauce is an extreme form of punishment that qualifies as torture.

Let me say a couple of things here. I get entirely frustrated by stories like this and the reasons are many.
Firstly, there are a multitude of adoptees who exit the systems in Russia and Romania who suffer from attachment disorders on account of the environments in which they are "housed".
Secondly, there are a multitude of adoptive parents who discover this fact the hard way, when they realize their child isn't responsive to typical and even unskilled parenting methods.
Thirdly, when a child with attachment disorder goes untreated and is subjected to on-going torture, you're looking at a future sociopath.
Fourthly, intervention is possible for both the parent and the child!
I get frustrated because there can be real hope for the child and the parent. Dealing with a child who suffers from attachment disorder isn't for cowards. It creates an enormous burden on the parent and when that parent lacks education on child development, effective parenting and hasn't sought intervention, the outcome will never be positive.
There is a better way if people would seek the support they need!

To give her some credit, she did go on Dr. Phil to get help. Here's a follow-up:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yv1ey7Sf ... re=relatedI hope she is able to manage the poor child better now, and if she can't he should be with someone who can. I also hope she didn't do too much damage to him already. It's hard to imagine how anyone could have imagined that screaming threats and hot sauce were parenting.
Good thing we have Dr. Phil around when the restored gospel fails.

Ah, she goes on Dr. Phil and everything is butterflies and lollypops. Give me a break -- some cute music and nice camera angles do not give me sympathy for this woman in the least. I put her in the same category as the out-of-control cops you can see beating the heck out of innocent people, or violating their constitutional rights, in hundreds of videos on YouTube. Authoritarian parents turn out famous people -- Bundy, Manson, Hitler, Stalin...What she needs is a few days in jail so she knows she can't con people by pretending to be all sugar and spice on a TV program, and then have to take parenting classes coupled with cognitive behavioral therapy to alter her mindset that worships the concept of "might makes right."

So... how do you feel about cops beating the hell out of guilty people?

What about soap? Is soap torture too?
