An ecumenical service was held at Charterhouse, London, to commemorate the 475th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of St John Houghton and his companions.

In attendance were the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, who delivered a sermon at the service to commemorate the Carthusian Martyrs. Also present was the Rt Revd George Stack, Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Westminster; and the Revd Lord Griffiths of Burry Port, Superintendent Minister.

SAUCE

From the Archbishop's Sermon:

If Henry VIII is saved (an open question perhaps) it will be at the prayers of John Houghton. If any persecutor is saved it is at the prayers of their victim. If humanity is saved, it is by the grace of the cross of Jesus Christ and all those martyrs who have followed in his path.

Wow. The head of the Anglican Church may not be saved at all, unless it's by the prayers of his Catholic victim? Imagine a Latter Day Prophet saying that about Brigham Young.

You know, Stak, it was pointed out to me that there is currently a thread underway on the ironically named Mormon Dialogue board in which the participants are reflecting on the LDS Church's infamous priesthood ban. I hope that some of them see your thread here, and that it's cause for them to step back and think a bit more deeply.

I like Rowan Williams. He is a fine patristic scholar and (I understand) poet.

I'm going to take the traditional interpretation and say that men are saved by Christ. Call me old-fashioned if you want.

No, different guy. Here is a typical Rowan Atkinson sermon:

Much better then the one in the OP.

Prayer for those who have wronged you is much more powerful than allowing anger to poison your life.

Matthew 5:44

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.

Good words. They don't get much play in today's religions.

There are other good words, which are better descriptors of the real world...

Romans 12:20
Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
