Should the Church Officially Apologize to Blacks?

There was a recent post by mms regarding an Official Statement by the First Presidency explaining the Church's position in regards to the "Negro".

A Statement from the First Presidency:
August 17, 1949

The attitude of the Church with reference to Negroes remains as it has always stood. It is not a matter of the declaration of a policy but of direct commandment from the Lord, on which is founded the doctrine of the Church from the days of its organization, to the effect that Negroes may become members of the Church but that they are not entitled to the priesthood at the present time. The prophets of the Lord have made several statements as to the operation of the principle. President Brigham Young said: “Why are so many of the inhabitants of the earth cursed with a skin of blackness? It comes in consequence of their fathers rejecting the power of the holy priesthood, and the law of God. They will go down to death. And when all the rest of the children have received their blessings in the holy priesthood, then that curse will be removed from the seed of Cain, and they will then come up and possess the priesthood, and receive all the blessings which we now are entitled to.”

President Wilford Woodruff made the following statement: “The day will come when all that race will be redeemed and possess all the blessings which we now have.”

The position of the Church regarding the Negro may be understood when another doctrine of the Church is kept in mind, namely, that the conduct of spirits in the premortal existence has some determining effect upon the conditions and circumstances under which these spirits take on mortality and that while the details of this principle have not been made known, the mortality is a privilege that is given to those who maintain their first estate; and that the worth of the privilege is so great that spirits are willing to come to earth and take on bodies no matter what the handicap may be as to the kind of bodies they are to secure; and that among the handicaps, failure of the right to enjoy in mortality the blessings of the priesthood is a handicap which spirits are willing to assume in order that they might come to earth. Under this principle there is no injustice whatsoever involved in this deprivation as to the holding of the priesthood by the Negroes.

The First Presidency

You would be hard pressed not to find the above statement very offensive and racist. Unfortunately, the Church has a long and rich tradition of making similar derogatory statements regarding black people.

Should the LDS Church own up to its history and make a public formal apology for their past racist statements and discrimination?

If not, why?

Of course they should apologize. They should also apologize to gays for Prop 8 and women for their anti-ERA campaign. But apologizing when you've screwed up is for lay members, not Church royalty.

I think it's fair to say that Mitt Romney is going to be asked his opinion on Church doctrine and statements like the one in the OP. It might be good PR for the Church to get ahead of these issues by publicly apologizing. One can always hope....

When will the blacks apologize for being fence sitters during the war in heaven?

Don't forget the gays. They have a lot to apologize for. Also, don't get me started with how much the women need to apologize (just ask Derrick).

Yes. Unfortunately I have had to awkwardly attempt to "explain" the Church's past teachings on this issue to several people. It would be so much easier for members confronted with this issue if the Church would just publicly apologize.

Members could then just point to the apology and explain that the Church's teaching on this issue was an unfortunate product of its time and the Church is now moving forward. End of discussion.

I bet Mitt Romney wishes this would happen.

The Mormon church is an organization run by men. It is the church of Men run by men. God shakes his head with regards to this church. Joseph Smith and his buddies made the whole thing up to try and restore what they thought the people might accept as a restored true religion. What a joke. Just like the Explanations of Facsimile No. 3 are a joke -- and utterly a lie uttered from the lips of Joseph Smith who was shot dead for his lies after pissing so many people off for his crap.

Thanks for nothing, Joseph Smith! I'm glad they shot you!

But, I think Mormon women need to apologize to ME for a LOT of lies, and also punishment me, alot, for the sins of other men.

The Brethren will NEVER apologize for the Curse of Cain Doctrine. Haven't you heard? They are saying (VIA LDS Public Affairs) "The Church NEVER taught that blacks are cursed in any way!"

The Church finds it is easier to LIE than to APOLOGIZE.
