Why does God waste so much time?

Why did God waste so much time having the world age so long, with species evolving over eons of time, when He had the power to create the world and place man on it in six days?
Do you really think you can have your religion and your science too?

This makes the arrogant assumption that we are the only reason the Earth was created.

First off. Thanks for the sig, quote line. Cool, and right on.
The creation story is a parable to impress upon people the need to take a break every week. The importance of this cycle is just that important that the Lord would use creation itself to establish such a precedent to command a day of rest, a day or worship, that we not forget the Lord. In the creation story we learn of God and his greatness and glory. And we are given a space in our life cycle to reflect upon God and rest from all other cares and considerations.
The simple fact that we know that the Lord has already created worlds without number makes the six days of creation moot as for the origin of life. Evolution is a hapless study guide for academics. It is useless for truth. It is an arrangement and organization of man's wisdom. It is utter folly. However, it is very true that our earth did exist for billions of years as the spirit birth process continued in the heavens above this world. Twenty billion spirit children are not brought forth in a day, not even a day of a thousand years.

How do you know it was a waste of time and how do you know He could have or should have done it literally in six days? We can't God still be all powerful relative to man and still be bound by rules and laws?
Do you really think you can have your religion and your science too?
Yes quite.

Is that the same arrogant assumption that Joseph Smith, Jr. made when he wrote:
Moses 1:39 wrote:For behold, this is my work and my glory-to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
?
So again I will ask, why according to Mormon scripture did God trifle away billions of years with dinosaurs and evolution if you believe also science that puts the age of the earth around 6 billion years?

There is a related discussion going on about this over at the
Prosblogion. Kenny Pearce presents the following argument:
1. A perfectly rational being who could create a world would choose a world which was optimally simple relative to the class of worlds which (a) are among his options, and (b) achieve all of his ends. A world is optimally simple relative to a class of worlds iff it achieves the best balance of (i) having few laws, (ii) having simple laws, and (iii) having few lawless events. (There may be more than one optimally simple world relative to a class, if there is a tie.)
2. An omnipotent being's class of options for worlds to create would include every possible world.
3. For any set E of rationally permissible ends, and world w in which those ends are achieved, there is a possible world w' in which all members of E are achieved at least as well as in w, and whose laws are as few and simple as those of w, and in which there are no lawless events.
Therefore,
4. A being who was perfectly rational and omnipotent would create a world in which all of his ends were achieved without lawless events.
Lawless events are defined as, "Lawless events are those which don't follow, either probabilistically or deterministically, from the laws of nature. (interpret 'follow from' in whatever sense your favorite theory of laws requires.)"
Good stuff. Good stuff.

No. This statement was made after God was very clear that he was speaking of this world only. Note that in scripture world does not necessarily mean the Earth. We are told the world will end while the Earth goes on.
So again I will ask, why according to Mormon scripture did God trifle away billions of years with dinosaurs and evolution if you believe also science that puts the age of the earth around 6 billion years?
The answer is in the Creation story particularly the Pearl of Great Price ones.
Read and find out.

My wife recently worked with a fella who didn't believe in dinosaurs.
She said, "That's weird that you don't believe in them, because, you know, we have their bones."
The man said, "It's not part of God's plan. I don't believe it."
So. God's plan. Create a planet. Stock it full of dinosaurs. Kill them off. Create man who doesn't believe dinosaurs are part of His plan.
Religion certainly enlightens people, no? Good stuff. Good stuff.

So you are trying to point out the stupidity of someone your wife works with to us why?
Are you complaining your wife is in an idiotic profession?
Or building a pointless strawman knowing no one here will defend it so you can score a cheap victory (in your own mind at least)?
