I had my first alcoholic drinks tonight ... ever!

So, I have been a non-believer for a few months now. However, for some reason, I have been reluctant to break the "Word of Wisdom" and have drinks with some friends. Tonight, I took the plunge. Here are a few observations.

1. It was fun: drinking a little really does loosen the conversation. I am not shy to begin with, but it makes talking that much easier. In fact, there was a cute waitress at the restaurant where I was having the drinks. Before, I would have just flirted a little and left it at that. Instead, I actually asked her for her phone number. She said she was seeing someone, but it still felt great.

2. I didn't get drunk: I had two drinks in about 4 hours with lots of food. I didn't feel the slightest bit drunk. In fact, the only way I even noticed that the drinks had alcohol was through the taste and by the fact that my stomach burned a bit. When I was Mormon, I was lead to believe that even a tiny bit of alcohol would get you super wasted. Not so much.

3. I felt more ... adult: Drinking, for most other cultures, is almost a right of passage into adulthood. I am sad to say that I was 30 before I had my first drink. I feel a little pathetic, to be honest.

As to point 1 yes, it is true that drinking can loosen someone up. However, when you see the drinking culture in Britain and complete lack of self control that many young people have, well, it would have been better if those young people never took their first drink. Alcohol is addictive because of the feelings it gives to people. But if one looks at many cultures, such as in scandinavia, Britain, Russia and a host of other cultures, alcohol is becoming an escapte valve for many people to forget their problems.

You have no idea who would be if you had your first drink at 14. You may just be an alcoholic now or worse a wife beater since for many of the above cultures, domestic violence is triggered when the partner is abusive and drunk. Be thankful and not pathetic.

Here is the way I sum it up. Alcohol really doesn't taste good. It makes me hot and my nose itch and I have to keep drinking it to keep a buzz going. It costs money that I could spend more wisely on other things.

Yeah ....

So, everyone who drinks is a wife beater, eh?

Um ...

No, but alcohol has much to do with domestic violence. Now this violence can take many forms. But certainly it does have an influence.

Any other questions you can write to the World Health Organization as linked above.

Well, doctor, the more we know is the more we know. No projection necessary. of course someone like Keith may be an exception. But he really doesn't know who he would be now if he drank at a younger age.

All true. Beer can make a person piss a lot and give a guy a nice round beer belly and a red rummy nose.

Too much KFC can do the same thing. It's amazing how why me chimes in on things he knows nothing about. Beer is an acquired taste, and it tastes wonderful. Instead of putting on your white shirt and tie and wasting a Sunday afternoon, option B includes some NFL games and some Sam Adams Oktoberfest. Of course, option C would be attending a Catholic church where the bosom doesn't burn with a Mormon soul.

Drink up Johnny! After a while you will get good at it and then having a drink won't be such a big deal. You may even acquire a taste for bourbon on the rocks.

I've never felt the urge to beat my wife or kids. I've never had a beer with breakfast or wanted to stay drunk all the time. Contrary to Mormon and whyme belief, booze ain't heroin.

Come over whyme, I'll buy you a drink. I make a killer Manhattan.
