'their creeds were an abomination in his sight'

Post by _sock puppet »

Joseph Smith-History wrote:18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.

19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”

Who was speaking to JSJr in verse 19?

Do you believe all sects as of 1820 were wrong?

Do you believe all current sects but Mormonism are wrong?

Do you believe that all sects as of 1820 had creeds that are an abomination in the sight of God?

Do you believe all current sects but Mormonism have creeds that are an abomination in the sight of God?

Do you have any historical references to any professors of any sects, as of 1820, denied the power of God?

Do you have any historical references to any professors of any sects, as of 1820, teaching commandments of men?

Do you believe that the Mormon Church has softened its stance towards other religions as compared to earlier positions taken, such as their creeds being an abomination to diety? Why?

Probably Christ (cf vs 17) but it wouldn't matter since the Father and Son are unified in mind and purpose.

Do you believe all sects as of 1820 were wrong?

Yes.

Not to hand, but anyone who denied that God speaks through prophets today would certainly qualify.

Do you have any historical references to any professors of any sects, as of 1820, teaching commandments of men?

Any trinitarian or sola fide or sola scriptura doctrine, OSAS, etc.

Do you believe that the Mormon Church has softened its stance towards other religions as compared to earlier positions taken, such as their creeds being an abomination to diety? Why?

Not really. A nicer face is presented perhaps, but the bottom line is that we claim to be the only true Church.

Actually, sox, none are presently more wrong and a greater abomination in the sight of God than are the LDS Mormons. They never did get it right. See D&C 84 for that. Right would have been that Zion which never was. But the seed of the Restoration was good. And it did eventually bring forth fruit even amongst a field full of nothing but tares as far as the mind's eye can still see. Fruit that was quite naturally cast out from among them as true fruit must of necessity condemn their abominations and challenged them in their LDS pride.

God misunderstood the question. Joseph Smith was asking about sex not sects. Joseph went along with the answer because he was too embarrassed to correct god. He would ask the question again later and receive the answer that multiple sex partners was OK.

The assumption is it was Jesus. But I often wondered why the account did not just say so rather than referring to the speaker as we personage. Who talks like that, even in 1838?

Do you believe all sects as of 1820 were wrong?

I used to in the LDS sense, sure. Now since I no longer think there is any one truth, and if there is a God he has not really been very clear on what his/her/its truth is I think that they all has some truth and somethings that were wrong.

Do you believe all current sects but Mormonism are wrong?

Used to. Not any more.

Do you believe that all sects as of 1820 had creeds that are an abomination in the sight of God?

If there is a God I think he thinks a lot of what all religions do in His name are an abomination, the LDS Church included.

Do you believe all current sects but Mormonism have creeds that are an abomination in the sight of God?

No

How about the Catholic Church mandate that priest be celibate so the Church could control property under the local parishes control? How about indulgences?

Do you believe that the Mormon Church has softened its stance towards other religions as compared to earlier positions taken, such as their creeds being an abomination to diety? Why?

On its face yes. As part of its dogma, nope.

This also comes off more as a Joseph Smith recounting and summation of what was said rather than a word for word quotation. Are these words recorded elsewhere? Do we really think Joseph just memorized them until he decided to write them down 18 years later?

Well this is canonized LDS scripture. Are you saying we cannot rely on what he said?

Stem seems willing to sacrifice any scripture or any doctrine if it furthers his need to believe in the overall truthfulness of the organization. I'm not sure how that works, but that seems to be his M.O.

Are there any that are more right than another? If not, then the contradictions are really of no consequence I suppose...

Are there any that are more wrong than right? How would you know?

Does it matter?
