Nice shot of the twin towers. At first I thought it was from the article, thinking how ironic.

He's not much of a thinker. First he (rightly) says that we don't really need to blame religious wars solely on religion, as religion was only one of the elements involved there. Sure, that's fair. It's really about tribalism. But then he goes on to say that we wouldn't have had universities without religion. Really? Apply the same standard used in A and apply it to B, Dan.

The American civil rights movement, the British anti-slavery campaign and the Underground Railroad would be unrecognizable without their evangelical flavor.
That's an interesting example too, considering the American justification for slavery came from the Bible in the first place.

Unreflective man invokes concepts of possible worlds and aesthetic values with no care and ends up passing on a folksy and uninspiring observation as if it was the result of some deep reflection.

It's also an interesting example considering the Mormon church's position on civil rights and slavery.

I, personally, would like the opportunity to live in this world without religion for a while. Can we just give it a try, say for a century or two?
It might not turn out to be so bereft of art, music, architecture and rich meaning as every believer thinks. It just might actually have more of the above. Until religion leaves the planet we won't know for sure. This fallacious argument for religion might work well on the sheep in the pews, but the picture in the OP makes a good point. If there were no religion, we might have a lot fewer memorials to dead loved ones around. Or not. But until we give it a try, we can't say for sure.

I was just through two beers and some chips, while listening to Bagley and Bigler on Kuer, and came across this post.
What a great laugh! Thanks, I needed that, at the moment.
