Totally appropriate, I say to the "Legend" part.

Now it's like Halloween. People dress up as fanciful people and creatures that never existed: Superman, Frodo, vampires, what have you. Pretending to be something that never existed, for fun and a good cause.

Lamanites are a legend indeed.

Does the LDS church still teach the idea/legend that Native Americans and Polynesians are actual descendants of the Lamanites?

BC, is this teaching doctrine? Or has it been long enough that this teaching is no longer considered truth?

The Church has no choice.
Within the Joseph Smith History Moroni is quoted as telling Joseph Smith that the Lamanites are the 'literal' ancestors of the native Americans.
There's no escaping that statement.

I see no reason to not change the name, to update based on current policy.

Umm .. have you not heard of the tactic of 'The Scribes Did It, And There Is No Proof Joseph Ever Said That'? I thought it was taught as part of the basic training in Mopologetics 101. (There is of course pretty well nothing that Joseph Smith can be proved to have said about anything.)

I think this tactic was first developed as a means of countering the 'Zelph Attack'.

Yep, heard about that but cannot believe that the Lord's one true Church on the Earth would need to get up to nonsense like that...

Anyway, it's in the canon and there's no way that they would change that...
