What is the difference here?

How is the mainstream Christian tendency to say Mormons aren't Christian different from the foundational LDS teaching/belief that creedal Christianity is apostate? Or is it?

No difference at all and it's the root cause of the hostile nonLDS Christian "cult" reaction. This is as it should be according to the scriptures despite protestations from other well meaning but ark-steadying LDS.
Asking someone to bring what truths they have with them also requires they reject falsehoods that might otherwise come too.

I agree with Mr. Backspace, although I don't think that members of the church who take exception to the cult label are all ark-steadiers.
As loyal members we should stop getting offended by the charge. We are what we are and should make no apology for it.

I have no problem with those who take exception with the cult label. I was actually referring to those LDS who tend to downplay or even not believe in the only true Church claim and all it's implications.
