In a film shown to non-mormons at Temple Square, just before Joseph Smith is led off to Carthage Jail, he says to Brigham Young: "You lead the Church!" or something of that sort.

Comment: PURE MYTH! Never happened. Nothing like that or near it was ever said. Joseph Smith NEVER said "Brigham Young will one day lead the Church". That was added about 1866 in Utah, written in the margins of Joseph Smith's journal, in an handwritting NOT of Joseph Smith or any of his scribes. No other account that confirms this. Pure fiction.

LDS Public Affairs (since 1996): "No, the Church NEVER taught that blacks are cursed in any way nor were they ever the descendants of Cain. A few Members may have held this view, but it was never a doctrine of the Church".

Comment: Yes...it was "a doctrine of the Church" for 130 years.

Mike Wallace (60 Minutes): "Does you Church get involved in politics?"

Gordon B. Hinckley (shaking his head no): "Nooooooooo!!!"

When...oh when...will Church leaders JUST....STOP....LYING????

Earlier this year I spent a lot of time posting at the "http://www.answerbag.com" website. There was a lady who at the time posted a lot there that said she was LDS, but she had some pretty bizarre ideas about church doctrine in general and the nature of Jesus of Nazareth in particular that made the other Latter-day Saint posters to that forum cringe.

I personally didn't have any problem with her at all. I didn't agree with everything she thought was LDS doctrine, but I didn't find what she believed significantly more dangerous than some things I've heard some Sunday School teachers declare.

At one point an LDS poster asked me to join with him in calling her on the carpet for what he called her lies. I told this poster that the way I understood the word lie, somebody has to know that the thing s/he is saying is false in order for the statement to actually be a lie. I wasn't convinced this lady knew what she was saying was false, so I refused this other poster's suggestion.

I guess I feel I owe the leaders of the LDS Church the same courtesy I owe this lady. I'm not going to conclude that any of them are lying until I know that they know what they're saying is false. And I'm not going to conclude that what they're saying is false until they've had a chance to defend themselves against the accusation that they are lying.

It's an easy thing to just make the blanket statement that a group of people (like the LDS leaders) are lying. It's a much more difficult thing to try to give what they're saying a fair trial, to try to consider the possibility that maybe they mean something other than what we take as face value, to try to keep an open mind that maybe the things that we think we know about the things they're talking about might actually be mistaken.

I am scheduled to be in Salt Lake City sometime in December, and if I have some time I will go to Temple Square and probably see this movie that you are talking about here.
