... how was this addressed in the time before
"white and delightsome" was changed to "pure and delightsome"?

Thanks in advance, everybody.

I don't know how it was addressed, if at all, prior to the change, but I think that a majority of LDS people have always held the view that Jesus Christ was caucasian. This might emerge from the First Vision account of personages whose brightness and glory defy all description. Granted, the account doesn't specifically say "white."

If you view Jesus Christ as being the literal son of God (and LDS people do), then you'd expect him to have his biological father's DNA. You'd expect him to be at least somewhat similar to his father in appearance. Most LDS people apparently think that they are identical, or nearly so, in appearance.

This may lead some to the conclusion that Jesus Christ looked significantly different from his more olive-skinned contemporaries in Judea.

In every description of Jesus, Elohim, and any angels or resurrected beings I've ever read from Joseph Smith (they all seem to come from Joseph Smith, apparently it's too sacred for any of his successors to write or speak about the kinds of things Joseph Smith would tell to anyone who would listen) has Celestial Beings being white as the driven snow.

If you blow the next one of Jesus up enough to get a good look at the color of Jesus's eyes, you can tell they are clearly blue. At least they had enough sense not to make his blonde. Presumably the albino look didn't come in until after the resurrection, when Jesus returned to heaven and re-assumed the natural coloring of the gods.

Here's the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary, to inform her that the Creator of the Universe intended to impregnate her. He's a white guy, with a white, or at least grayish looking coif and beard.

Here's another angel, this one anonymous but obviously of good Norwegian stock, telling the shepherds that Jesus had just been born.

Two more angels sporting the "Celestial White Dude" look.

The martyr Stephen seeing Jesus and God in all their caucasian glory:

Jesus's 2nd Coming in the clowds, with crowds of celestial white angels trumpeting his arrival.

Knock knock. Who's there. It's Jesus, LOL.

Not to mention, LDS doctrine has it that the very first homo sapiens on Earth, Adam and Eve, were also caucasian. Apparently caucasian is the race of God, and all other races are deviations from this standard.

Here's Adam and Eve praying together at an altar.

This is what Native Americans used to look like before sin and corruption caused God to curse them with the darker skins and asiatic facial features they now have:

Had he been of a completely different skin tone from his contemporaries during his life, it would arguably be of enough importance to include in the New Testament. Was it? I am not aware of any such references. To non-Christians, Jesus of Nazareth had a regional, biological father - thus his racial identity would be non-white. This is easily fact checked.

Theist traditions represent their Gods (when in human form) as being of their region-specific race.
Having grown up an active Catholic in Europe, I can attest to the fact that the more north you traveled, the lighter skin tone Christ was depicted as having in the church art of the regions.
Which is something I can sort of accept, after all, peoples worlds were incredibly confined to their very near locales for centuries.

My problem lies in the fact that "white and delightsome" was a literal concept that required believers to look the other way in respect to the historical Jesus of Nazareth not being white.
Unless, of course, they simply *believed* he was white. Which appears to have been the case.
