Thanks. This is sickening. I hope the Canadian courts are able force the opening of the scouting documents. That may apply pressure for the same to be done in the US. This has been dragging on for years in this country.

And though the organization’s current policy requires reporting allegations to police, sex abuse lawyers such as Robert Talach argue Scouts Canada should re-examine its older files for past cases that may not have been reported.

Doesn't appear to be any wrong-doing on the organization's part.

First, the idea that *any abuser* may have been shielded is reprehensible - even if that shielding was unintentional.

Second, from the same report:

"A confidential 1972 policy memo by the Boy Scouts of America has also come to light, showing officials urged discretion when dealing with molesters. "Indicate [to the accused molester] that the BSA is not sharing this information with anyone and only wish him to stop all Scouting activity," it states.

"The Boy Scouts routinely did not notify the police when they became aware of child molesters," said Kosnoff. "Their primary concern was protecting the organization. So they covered it up.""

Even so, the Church affirmed it's support for scouting. Here are a few gems:

"As I have said, Scouting is officially recognized as part of the Church program....I want to bear testimony to the importance of Scouting in the Church...I want to say that this Scout movement helps build the kingdom of God, it helps us with the priesthood program." President N. Eldon Tanner, Former Counselor in the First Presidency, June 1968.

"I would to God that every boy of Boy Scout age in America could have the benefits and the blessings of the great Boy Scout program. It is truly a noble program. It is a builder of character not only in the boys but also in the men who provide the leadership." President Ezra Taft Benson, former President of the Church, . . . So Shall Ye Reap [1960], 138.

"Scouting is an integral part of the Church program for young men and complements Aaronic Priesthood quorum work. Where programs for Scout troops are available, please understand it is not an optional program." President Ezra Taft Benson, former President of the Church, address to the Young Men general presidency and board, Sept. 1979.

Way to use those prophetic powers, guys! Nice one, turning over young boys to well over 2500 sexual predators nationwide! What else did the holy ghost tell you?

I've always wondered what draws people to the vocations or avocations that they choose.

The value of Scouting not withstanding, it seems to be something that would interest pedophiles. I'm unaware of any data supporting this, but I think that a Scout leader is an avocation that might have a higher number of pedophiles than most (an unpaid, voluntary position that involves close contact with youngsters).

Maybe a serious review of the people that volunteer would be a good idea.

I noticed that you tried to post this in the "New" section at MDD, and that it was promptly shut down. I was also sickened to see that the apologists were claiming that this protection of pedophiles was "inspired."

JSJr's youngest known sexual conquest was 14. To be a boy scout you have to be 12. It doesn't seem that mysterious to me why the TBMs/mopologists defend the boy scouts on this one.

I was disturbed to see Dan Peterson, in light of this report, call the Scouting program inspired.

Even if one accepts the Prophet Joseph's relations with young women, it is very hard to accept the extension of apologia for the defense of a modern organization that knowingly put children in harm's way by sheltering pedophiles.

Considering the source, it is no surprise.

Boy scouts is a breeding ground for sexual mischief, and yet a gay man who is open is disqualified from participating because of presumption that if you are gay you are a pedophile. Bizarro world logic.
