Being gay is like a disease

Post by _Rambo »

According to my Mom.

I told my Mom yesterday that the bishop of my old wards son came out of the closet. My Mom was like oh my goodness it's just spreading everywhere. Those poor parents must be heart broken. Then she said Rambo I hope you don't turn out that way. I said Mom I like girls too much (not sure if that made her feel better). I also said to my mom it was probably pretty hard for this kid to come out and tell his parents that he is gay.

What I have noticed is most Mormons I talk to about this is they feel for the parents/family but they never think about how hard it is for the person that comes out.

What really got to me was when my Mom said. That the parents would still love the kid but they just hate the way they choose to live and the evil things that they are doing.

This is just a totally messed up way of thinking to me and I think it is very un healthy.

Not sure what else to say but I just wanted to rant.

I guess another thing to add is that more people are coming out of the closet because they feel more comfortable about it. Society is now more accepting.

My Mom then said that back in her day that gay people would be put in jail for it. I said that is terraible and just wrong. She really had no response.

You shouldn't rant about your mommy. Its true though, that attitudes about gay people is poor in many religious traditions--LDS included. Its too bad.

I think it's more like an addiction. At best, it can only be a genetic abberation.

A friend of mine, a PhD psychologist, and a very liberal person, explained to me that until the 1960s being gay was considered by the APA to be a mental disease and was classified as such. It was treatable by Freudian therapy and electroshock, the professionals said. Thus, on a narrow vote, the disease classification was removed. The barbaric treatments came to an end. I'm really no expert in the area and I'm sure I butchered the terminology.

But, the classic Mormon position is that sex outside of hetero marriage is sinful. It doesn't matter if you are gaying it up or fornicating with your girlfriend, the sin is the same.

Nonetheless, gays are stigmatized by religious folk more than straight fornicating folk for reasons that span the centuries.

Yeah, my mom is probably like yours. She always, always has to say that someone is gay, like actors on tv. If she talks about them she refers to them as gay.

She talks about the "gay agenda" and crap like that. I am learning to gently talk about tolerance and how people need to be exposed to all different kinds of people.

Like your mom, mine often doesn't know what to say when I point these things out. Or she'll just kind of agree with me. LOL I will break down these walls! But, yeah, it can be frustrating and disheartening.

The reason would be, imho, is that homosexual fornication involves a second sin or is more of a sin because of the added element of homosexuality.

I would have to agree. The average Mormon would look at being gay as a bigger sin than fornicating. I think it's cause have the Mormons I know are fornicators as well.
