I find this bizzare, do you...?

I was searching LDS.org for the role of an Apostle and this is what it said:
To continue reading about the role and description of Apostles, see the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, a joint product of Brigham Young University and Macmillan Publishing Company. (Its contents do not necessarily represent the official position of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.)
Why would the official website of the Church direct you to further reading on an important subject from a source that they say may not reflect the official position of the Church?
That's nuts.

Because the only official position of the church is the missionary position.

Penniless, in two's and out on the street?

I think they'll go for it anywhere... for any price.

I don't see the fuss. What's wrong with the Church telling people where to look to learn more on the subject?

Well, I think the Church telling people to use sources that it may not agree with contradicts what it teaches people week in and week out about using only Church approved information?
Or in other words, the Church is approving of using a source for information that it may not approve of. Bizarre.

It is kind of odd. It would be like going to the Catholic Church website to find out who the Pope is and what he does, and being referred to an unofficial book with a disclaimer that the book doesn't necessarily reflect what the Catholic Church thinks.

The Church telling people what? I think you have things mixed up. The using church approved sources is for teaching lessons, i believe. the learning about stuff on an independent level is left to the individual to decide.
Or in other words, the Church is approving of using a source for information that it may not approve of. Bizarre.
Your conflating "approve of" with "stating an official position".

So the official fount of god's information cannot define what it means to be an 'apostle', one of the highest positions in the LDS Church, without referring the questioner out to an unofficial, and thus speculative source?
Could this be because it is too sacred to discuss what an apostle is?
Could it be because the FP/12 cannot agree on what it means to be an apostle, even though each has or has had that title?
