Opiate of the Masses vs. the Word of Wisdom

Karl Marx thought that religion stood as the opiate of the masses.
That is fine by me, but it seems that some definite clarification is needed in terms of the Word of Wisdom. I mean, what properties of opium did Karl Marx have in mind? The Word of Wisdom would suggest that if religion is used as an anesthetic to obviate the pain of our lives, then it is medicinal in nature and thus is allowed.
However, if religion as an opiate is designed to get you high, like those hippie-dippy evangelicals being high on the gospel, then it is clearly breaking the letter of the Word of Wisdom and we should abstain from such use.
I was hoping some of you could help shed light on this concern for choosing the right through our actions.
