...Alger.

A summary of the main alleged facts:
1. Joseph adopted her as his daughter.
2. Joseph was caught having sex with her by Oliver Cowdrey.
3. Joseph got her pregnant.
4. When Emma found out she sent Fanny away.

If these things are true Joseph should have been excommunicated.

1. Joseph never adopted her as his daughter; she was his housekeeper.
2. Emma, not Oliver, caught him having sex with her.

As an aside, anyone know what the word "fanny" is slang for in Britain? Ironic that Joseph's first tryst was with a girl named Fanny. Ever after he was in the constant pursuit of new fanny.

Were they married?

In England they won't say "fanny pack" because it's too lascivious. They say "bum bag" which I find hilarious.

You'll enjoy this!

It may be appropriate to point out that my nationality is British and I'm a big fan of Carry On films...

I was born in England as well (now an expat yank). I love the carry on films. Father (or mother) of Monte Python.

I think that's the million dollar question.

If I recall correctly, even Joseph admitted having relations with Fanny. But, were they married at the time or did he just claim they were after he got caught?

Couldn't Joseph Smith just make it a marriage by proclamation (being God's prophet and all)? "God says we're married" sine die. It's good to be a Prophet.
