While you're looking into this, let me know if you find any evidence that the church also performs it vicariously for the deceased. I had no idea this was ever practised, but while reading some of Wilford Woodruff's Journal (available here in case you are interested: WWJ ) he notes, while recording ordinances performed, that a fairly high number for proxy 2nd anointings were performed in the temples during his time in the leadership.

Consider this entry -

"March 19, 1894: I had a dream in the night. I met with Benjamin
Franklin. I thought he was on the earth. I spent several hours with him and
talked over our Endowments. He wanted some more work done for him than had
been done, which I promised him he should have. I thought very strange of my
dream. I made up my mind to get 2nd anointings for Benjamin Franklin and
George Washington."

Considering Ben Franklin's successes in attracting female admirers through-out his life, I have no doubt that were he to find himself on the other side and in need of ordinances then he would certainly be seeking all he could get. Makes one wonder what kind of system they have in spirit prison for dealing with adultery and the like. It's not like anyone could claim Ben didn't know it was against christian moral mores and therefore was without the law. And I believe there is some teaching somewhere that God is not a respecter of persons. So... <shrug>

Anyway, I hope you share whatever information you find.

I have not done much reading on it at all. I was reviewing back issues of JMH today and came across this article http://content.lib.utah.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/jmh&CISOPTR=9992&REC=1 regarding the Anointed Quorum at Nauvoo. The title of the article reminded me of when I asked BKP a question about the second anointing in a Q&A missionary session back in the 1975 when I was on my mission in South America. (He replied "You don't need to know about that".)

The WWJ journals look interesting and the sort of thing I enjoy reading.

Well I am sure you ran into it as you finished the journal but it appears that it was quite common to do proxy 2nd anointing. This is from page 106 of the same journal.

April 17, 1897: At 2 p.m. President Lorenzo Snow and Brother William Salmon
called and stayed for 1« hours and we conversed together. He gave me a list of
Salt Lake temple work since the commencement May 22, 1893 to March 31, 1897,
showing 142,679 baptisms for the dead, 3,646 for health--5,908 living
Endowments--81,933 dead endowments; ordinations 53 living--32,739 dead;
Sealings 2,590 living, 21,288 dead; children to parents 6,147 living; 17,936
dead; adoptions 67 living, 694 dead; 2nd anointing 1,017 living, 17,936 dead.
Totals: living 19,428; dead 297,794--317,222.

It'd be nice to be able to verify some of the potentially verifiable claims in that story:

1. Was Elder Harold G. Hillam president of the Europe West Area in April 2002?

2. Was Elder Ballard in Birmingham Englad for a Priesthood Leadership Training on Saturday the 18th of May, 2002?

3. Did John Huntsman's private jet make a flight to London that weekend, and was Elder Ballard on that flight?

Verifying those claims would't verify any other part of the story, but it would make the whole account more compelling. Ultimately, it'd be nice if the author identified himself, but to my knowledge he never did.
