"Let us consider the great mercy of God for a moment. A Chinese, born in China with a dark skin, and with all the handicaps of that race seems to have little opportunity. But think of the mercy of God to Chinese people who are willing to accept the gospel. In spite of whatever they might have done in the pre-existence to justify being born over there as Chinamen, if they now, in this life, accept the gospel and live it the rest of their lives they can have the Priesthood, go to the temple and receive endowments and sealings, and that means they can have exaltation. Isn't the mercy of God marvelous?"

You just can't make this stuff up.

Options for rebuttal of this seemingly racist staement by an Apostle.
1. You have taken the quote out of context
2. When he says Chinese he means all people without the gospel
3. He wasn't speaking officially
4. That was a fleck of history that now doesn't matter

Unfortunately he was either dead right or flat out in apostasy, in reflecting the Church's official position that: Chinamen were people that weren't 100% in the pre-existence, were born with a coloured skin to indicate their lack of valiance and were rightly prohibited from being Priesthood holders and temple attenders because that is what God wanted.

TBM's
Was Peterson a. Correct or b. in apostasy?

If there were a BCS championship given to the church leader with the most offensive/embarrassing quotes who would win?
I think the BCS championship would be between Mark E. Peterson and Brigham Young and Brigham Young would take home the trophy. Boyd K Packer and Heber C. Kimball would be playing in some other meaningless BCS bowl game thinking they deserved to be ranked #1 or #2.
