Mob violence and lawlessness issues are not unique to anti-Mormonism, and I believe that anti-Mormons have come a long way from their 19th-century thinking. But, instead of acknowledging the past and expressing appreciation for the progressive thought that has since happened, Mormons dwell on only the bad things, and forget the good. That's why I've never seen Simon Belmont post positively about anything anti-Mormon. I think he's too engrossed in the persecution complex and it may be influencing his online persona.

I'll start.

In 1984, Gerald (R.I.P.) and Sandra Tanner recognized that the Salamander Letter that Mark Hofmann was trying to sell was almost certainly a forgery. Even though it would have strengthened the Tanners' agenda if the Salamander Letter had been genuine, they demonstrated their integrity by their skepticism of Hofmann's claims.

And that is hardly their only work in opposing misrepresentations of the Church.

On occasion, the Tanners have publicly challenged irresponsible critics of Mormonism, earning praise even from some devoutly LDS scholars. Historian Daniel C. Peterson, chairman of the LDS apologetics group Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies at Brigham Young University, suggested the Tanners' willingness to debunk false documents regardless of their content was a sign of integrity:

"There are some anti-Mormons out there that I hold in contempt. They're demagogic. They spread hatred and strife and disharmony. I don't see the Tanners in that way."

The Tanners were among the first public critics of forger (and later, murderer) Mark Hofmann. Though Hofmann's "discoveries" of important Mormon documents often appeared to bolster the Tanners' own arguments, Jerald Tanner had, by early 1984, concluded there was significant doubt as to the Salamander Letter's authenticity, and "to the astonishment of a community of scholars, historians and students, published an attack on the so-called Salamander Letter." By late 1984, Jerald Tanner questioned the authenticity of most if not all of Hofmann's "discoveries" based in large part on their unproved provenance. However, the Tanners concurred with Hofmann in contending that the LDS church's apparent inability to discern the forged documents is evidence against church leadership being divinely inspired.

The Tanners have also debunked misrepresentations of the LDS Church by Christian evangelist Ed Decker's works, such as the film The God Makers.

I invite Simon Belmont and other Mormons to join Dr. Peterson and me in praising the Tanners for their commitment to integrity and their opposition to misrepresentations of the Church.

There are certainly a few good things to come from anti-Mormonism.

Perhaps the most important:

Without anti-Mormonism, we wouldn't have LDS apologetics.

No FARMS, no FAIR, no SHIELDS, no MI.

It would be a sad, sad world.

The more you toot the better you feel.

A world in which Simon Belmont would have to find a different organization to turn to for truth and guidance.

Such as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for example.

Samuel L. Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain, wrote a scathingly hilarious and painfully accurate review of The Book of Mormon.

He was also one of the most gifted writers that America has produced.

Mark Twain: another anti-Mormon who made the world a better place.
