Why is it that women are not deemed appropriate to be the final speaker in a Sacrament meeting?

Huh? In the ward I used to call "mine", women accounted for around 50% of closing speakers in sacrament, when you factor out stake visits.

In my ward it seems to always be a guy as final speaker (even though it's a fairly liberal ward otherwise).

The odd thing is, the new Handbooks (and the old ones, If I recall correctly) don't say anything about the need for men to be closing speakers. In fact, the new handbooks explicitly state that men AND women are able to give the closing prayer in sacrament meeting. Prior to this handbook, the rule was only men could give opening prayers, while women or men could give closing prayers.

It kinda says something about the culture the church creates, if you ask me.

I think it's part of Packer's unwritten order of things. You need to save the best talk for last.
