The Prophet's Alphabet

For those interested, I've finally found time to respond to Wade's inane posts about the Grammar and Alphabet of the Egyptian Language, as it pertains to Will Schryver's argument.

http://www.mormondialogue.org/topic/564 ... ge__st__40

I'm utterly amazed how many people are paying attention to these exchanges. I've received several emails from scholars who are following it closely, and last week William was so disturbed by the number of views the thread has been receiving, that he felt the need to psychoanalyze the audience and assert that the only reason people are reading the thread is because they want to read his and wade's responses!

Well, when I posted the topic last week it received just over 5,000 hits in the first two days. George and I stopped posting when there were 5,900 views. Over the past four days wade has been the only person posting, as if talking to himself, and the hits had only increased by 600 to 6,500 views. So this morning I posted a response for the first time all week, and then I went Christmas shopping for about 4 hours. When I returned, I saw that I'm still the last person to respond to that thread, and I was expecting the views to have gone up by maybe a thousand or so. Instead, the views jumped from 6,500 to well over 10,000.

This kinda puts a damper on William's belief that people only read my threads to see what he and wade have to say. I thought that was pretty funny.

When I watched William's presentation back in August 2010, my initial impression was that he was proposing to engage in an uphill battle. I was wrong. In the event, William's "uphill battle" hasn't been a battle so much as an uphill feint followed by a barrage of rhetorical stink-bombs to cover his tactical repositioning. "Hey Kids! Try Schryver's Cipher Theory -- Now with Less Cipher!"

Kevin,

Watching your posts over on MDD lately has been fascinating. On MDD, one generally expects to see an approximate 10:1 views to posts ratio.

The GAEL/Papyri thread you are on over there right now is running (an astounding) 250:1.

Who do you think the folks are who are paying so much attention?

Are folks really that invested in Will Schryver's silliness?

I'm glad you're enjoying it DrW.

To be completely honest, I'm stunned at the number of folks interested in this topic.

Who do I think they are? There is no way to tell for certain. All I know is that William had 137 reputation points before and after the thread (after more than 5000 posts) and I entered the discussion with a reputation of something like 60 with only around 500 posts to my name. Right now my reputation is at 126 and climbing, so I'm guessing the folks reading this thread aren't those who consider themselves my enemies. And I think they'd have to be registered to add reputation points.

As I said to wade, I've received emails from numerous people out of the blue, some of them are scholars in the LDS Church, some of them have published on this subject, and one of them actually works for signature books. They've all thanked me for the discussion, and they think wade and Will are ... "something else." Here is what one LDS scholar wrote me:

I've been reading your "Cipher" thread on the MD&D board. Your OP is well done. I'm impressed with (and commend you for) your staid posting, which shows a real talent at intelligent, academic discussion. In fact, I think you present very well-reasoned, cogent argumentation on the "Cipher" thread that deserves a well-reasoned and cogent response. So far I have not seen LDS apologists (in the know) do this.

So I don't think many people are really invested in Schryver's theory. In fact, I get the sense that the folks ate FAIR are looking for a good reason to drop it altogether. Given his recent spat with a moderator, I think there are more and more people becoming fed up with him.

The only guy following him around like a puppy dog and serving as his proxy in defending his crazy arguments, is a guy suffering from multiple learning disabilities (by his admission). All the relevant scholars appear to disagree with him.

William has lied and misrepresented too much. He has no credibility.

I was on the phone with George Miller a few hours ago and told him the views had breached 10,000. Right now it is pushing 13,000 and no one has posted since I did early this morning.

But then, I kinda made it known from the beginning that my responses will probably be confined to the weekends, especially during this holiday season. But that doesn't stop wade from "responding" daily in multiple posts through the week.

Incidentally, there is a great discussion in the Nephi and his Asherah thread.

Check out Robert Crockett taking LDS scholars to task over that issue.

You know what the best part of all this will be? Soon we will get to see another Schryver meltdown.
