I'm sure there are ways this is stranger than 19th Century Mormonism. I'm also sure that there are ways it's not.

Nothing to do with religion at all.
Here, in Hungary we had similar result.

People don't like to reveal certain things. My wife said to the questioner she were Mormon, then didn't marked it on the blank.

I've marked to decline.
In any normal society, the government has nothing to do with religion. (Yes, this is kind of critic...)

The government has the right to ask. I have the right to neglect.

Morley,

As a teen, I thought George Lucas was inspired when producing a story so inline with LDS cultural thought. The big similarity, of course, is the Force and the Spirit. In both the movie and in LDS cultural centers, the Force/Spirit sometimes overshadow the source of the power.

I love this, Ludwigm. When I did research, that was certainly was my experience with survey data.

In the media, the results of surveys are often treated as 'truth,' rather than as what they are: what people reported to be true. There are many problems that can present themselves (to name a few): the survey structure, the way the data is gathered, the expectations of those surveyed, the wording of questions asked, and even the number of options in the responses. Good surveys recognize and adjust for these. But not all surveys are good; and even when one has good data, not all presentations are done in a way that properly interprets said data.

I kinda did, too. I think the universality of this theme was one of the reasons for its wide appeal.

The Joseph Campbell, George Lucas connection. Campbell was brilliant and his writings and teachings on the universal themes in mythological stories was the basic framework for "Star Wars". It works for all of us because it follows the universal rules for theology.
