My family has started a new Smithmas eve tradition, somewhat like leaving cookies and milk out for Santa.

We place a glass of brandy out on the mantle in remembrance of Joseph Smith not accepting alcohol while a boy before his leg surgery. The children are left to wonder in amazement that it's still there, undrunk the next morning, looking every bit like the miracle it is.

This is, of course, followed by my drinking the brandy on Smithmas day in rememberance of the "bracer" he drank while in Carthage.

Ah, Smithmas. It's like Christmas and April Fools wrapped into one.

Smithmas! Yes, that rolls off the tongue better than Josephmas.

One learns so much on this board. All these years (and there are many of them) I've been missing out on another good excuse to party.

I especially like the tradition of putting out a glass of Brandy! I may put out several tonight. Of course I will have to sample them to make sure they are up to the quality that Jolly Old Joseph would expect.

I considered additional traditions that commemorated Joseph's spiritual wifery but so far, my wife has thrown up a wall on that front. If only I had access to an angel with a flaming sword...

Joking of course. But the possibilities for funny, messed up traditions seems to be fertile ground for someone with an active imagination...

My wife would probably object if I brought home a teenage house keeper on Smithmas Eve, as well. Chocolate coins in memoriam of the Kirtland Bank might fly though.

I am not celebrating Smithmas this year. I've just started celebrating Hitchmas, which begins, as of this year, on December 15th. It will in my house last 10 days, so I'm afraid there's no time left in the holiday season between Hitchmas and Christmas. Sorry Smith fanbois, you're frozen out.

OK, I'm going to be a little petty (I never have been before, of course), but it's just bizarre how the paintings of Joseph Smith have morphed into this weird, nordic, short-haired version of Del Parsons' Jesus.
