Revealing all their finances. All of them. That would be devastating and the leaders know it.

There is really no way of knowing this for certain. I would like to think an opening of the books would free the Church from needless suspicion.

The church takes all kinds of hits from critics on this policy, in place since 1959. Why would they take the damage if they could avoid it by revealing their perfectly clean books?

Zeezrom is right. The only rational answer is this: the damage inflicted by keeping the books closed is less than the damage they expect would be inflicted if they opened the books.

How about this: Truly open up the First Presidency vault and give ALL historians full and complete access to the historical archives.

Like THAT is ever going to happen!

You underestimate the power of Mormons rationalizing fraud.

What single honest act would hurt LDS the most?

That none of the Brethren have seen with their eyes the resurrected Jesus in the flesh, nor elohim, and have not so much as heard the voice of either with their ears or even seen a burning bush. (They too have only experienced the self-induced rush of emotions that COJCOLDS hijacks and instructs people is 'the Spirit' confirmation.)

This would not only de-mystify what BKP so skillfully attempts to maintain as a mystery, but make the FP/12's personalities, like BKP's, so much more relevant to members and other watchers of the Brethren.

There are no honest acts that would hurt the Church. There are dishonest questions, answers to which would hurt the Church and the honest thing to do in those cases is not to answer them.

What damage?

The explanation for all the LDS Church's policies is quite simple. The LDS Church exists for one purpose and one purpose only, and that is to carry out the will of God; it most definitely is not to handle its affairs the way society wants it to handle them.

It appears your definition of honesty is warped.

How does one tell whether a "definition of honesty" is warped or isn't?
