I was just reading this article
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705346461/How-a-seer-stone-helped-in-the-Book-of-Mormon-translation.htmlfrom 2009 on deseretnews.com. It says, "The important thing is that Joseph believed that he was able to find lost objects and that this gift was granted him by God."
How is it known that Joseph thought he could find lost objects and that the gift came from God?
Thanks.

Given the fact that there is no record of JSJr having succeeded in doing so, he must have had the mind-set of an apologist: but there is room for the slightest possibility he could find lost objects, right?

The article quotes the story about him finding a pin for Martin Harris. I don't kow if that is a credible story or not.
I am pretty sure we have no idea what Joseph thought, other than he didn't think he made very much money doing it.

Joseph Smith apparently had the reputation, but what Joseph
himself thought is less clear. He apparently was confident enough in his abilities to accompany Josiah Stowell to Pennsylvania in 1826. His family certainly believed in him. Joseph Smith’s father is reported to have stated that his son’s ability to see treasure with a seer-stone was a “wonderful power which God had…miraculously given him.”
For those interested, I just
posted about seer-stones on my blog and will make at least two more related posts over the coming week.

To be specific Joseph had a history of making people think he could find lost objects.

Young Mr.Antley's blog wrote:The method through which this was done was simple. The seer would usually place the stone in his or her hat in order to exclude the light, and while gazing into the stone at the bottom of the dark hat the seer was capable of seeing what they desired. Almost
See, this is where we depart Joe, even within a proper context and ascribing the best intentions to Joseph Smith, I can’t suspend my disbelief when faced with the fact that a Mormon must believe God reveled important ancient scripture to a dude with his face stuck in a hat.

I love how anti's LIE in their every word and they think they are telling the truth.
There are SEVERAL known examples of Joseph initially being successful.
And no, I'm not going to look it up for you, I've already been an idiot anti-mormon, and had to do MY OWN due diligence to know the actual truth of things instead of your anti-mormon lies. If you want to know the truth, you do your own work.
