A common defense of Mormonism is to try and separate official doctrine from what was taught at one time but is not longer believed as if somehow placing the blame on whomever taught it distances it from today's Church. We refer to this as 'throwing someone under the bus." Irregardless of whether or not a belief was doctrine the fact remains that there are aspects of the Church that "We don't teach anymore". I have listed some of them below. When you throw someone under the bus they drag the Church with them.

1. Polygamy
2. Blacks and the priesthood
3. Blacks in the preexistence.
4. Adam/God
5. Man becoming Gods
6. Literal garden of Eden and Flood
7. Adoptive sealings
8. Catholic church= the great and abominable church


What else do we no longer teach?

I don't agree with that whole list. I'd say close to half of it is still in the manuals.

Saying we don't teach something anymore and actually *not* teaching it anymore are not the same. heh

Never taught #4. Probably never taught #6 in the way you think we do.

I think the Catholic Church has sometimes been implicated in #8; can you find something doctrinal on that? We still teach that the LDS Church is the only true Church and therefore the Catholic church would fall under the category of apostate christianity.

Otherwise, depending what you mean by #7, all the rest is still doctrine and none of it seems to meet your criteria of "we no longer teach it".

Edited to correct: #3 is not doctrine.

Also, the Church has no official position on whether Joseph Smith was a prophet, and there is nothing in official LDS doctrine that precludes sacrificing kittens to Satan.

'Cuse me. #3 is not doctrine. I missed that.

Plural marriage is still a doctrine. It is official doctrine that God can authorize it any time. It is official doctrine that a man may be sealed to more than one woman, even today. There has been no repudiation of previous authorized plural marriages. etc.

The priesthood ban is still doctrine. It happened. There has been no repudiation of it. etc.

#5 is a given. It continues to be taught expressly. Even GBH never implied it is not doctrine.

This is talked about a lot. But do you ever think a God would just want to be a regular old mortal again? I don't mean God going into a man's body but rather a God transforming into a man - an irreversible procedure.

I am wondering what is being taught by the LDS Church today that by 2030 it will be professing to no longer teach?

Yeah, GBH just didn't know about it. I guess a lifetime of full-time Church service he never had an opportunity to read JSJr's King Follett Sermon. They really need to lighten the load on these GAs.
