You could probably make an argument either way. Here are his credentials for both. Feel free to correct my lists or add to them.

Conservative:
Banking scheme (and other money making schemes)
Super religious
Military General (self appointed)

Liberal:
Non-traditional marriage and family system
Socialist fiscal policy
Anti-slavery

I don't know about politics but he would certainly be a member of the FLDS rather than the LDS Church.

He'd be just like Newt Gingrich -- a serial adulterer and an opportunist. You wouldn't be able to put him in either a liberal or conservative camp. It would be all about Joe.

My favorite answer so far. Joe would have claimed allegiance to whatever philosophy promoted his desires and switched to the other when it served his purposes.

If you need to put him in a category, "self serving pragmatist" might be best.

Conservative.

No Socialism (LoC forbids it, forbids a comunal lifestyle and common property, and advances capitalism)
Military
Marriage

etc.

Joseph didn't seem to have strong family values, as he pursued relationships with 30 women outside legal marriage. Are you sure you want to pin that position on conservatives?

Plural marriage can be God authorized.
