Re: Romney's Magic Mormon Underpants makes the News (link)
I just had a revelation as to why Romney is displaying his Magic Mormon Underpants!
GOVERNMENT SAVINGS and Debt Reduction. He can sell the US Military on using Magic Mormon Underpants instead of expensive Body Armor for US Troops thus saving the US Government MILLIONS in Defense Spending. And since we all know that in the World of Mormonism inanimate objects are Spiritual (The Earth for Example), we can buy Magic Mormon Underpants for Tanks, Planes, Armor Vehicles, Light Vehicles and further stretch the savings to HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS.
BRILLIANT ROMNEY BRILLIANT!!!!

Actually, I thought that the explanation given was right on target, and actually inspired continued respect for the difference in beliefs:
"The principle behind Mormon garments would be familiar to any Baptist who's worn a 'What Would Jesus Do' bracelet, or any Jew who's worn a yarmulke or tzitzit (woven threads Orthodox Jews wear on shawls under their shirts)," writes Coppins, who is LDS. "As the website for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints puts it, garments are worn as 'an outward expression of an inward commitment.'"
With care and tact Coppins explains what the sacred undergarments are, who wears them, what they look like, when they are worn and how Mormons get them. He also responds to the "magic underwear" comments that are often associated with this article of clothing.
He closes with a quote from the late Elder Carlos E. Asay , who said that the sacred garment "is given to remind wearers of the continuing need for repentance, the need to honor binding covenants made in the house of the Lord, and the need to cherish and share virtue in our daily living so that promised blessings may be claimed."

Public ridicule of something sacred to any individual is not cool. It is unfortunate that Mitt must always fear wearing a white shirt and taking off his coat, so as to invite criticism from that simple act.
I say leave it be, you're fishing for the inappropriate here.

I almost never comment on things like this, because it's just "whatever" to me and my life, that is to say, it's not really relevant to me. But I did want to reply to just this one series in the piece:
I don't see how this can be thought or said to be true of garments. At all. I don't think it's a fair comparison.
How are garments an "outward" expression when they are worn under clothing?

I think in the sense that anything worn symbolizing an inner commitment is an outer expression. I agree that it is a stretch, but I think that the meaning was taken in a broader context.

Oh, I get the intention. I just wanted to pose the question. :-)

There are SO many other things about Mormonism that are more worthy of criticism, why is it such a subject of interest?

Maybe it's a little disturbing for people that don't know anything about Mormons that a potential President believes in magic knickers. It does sound very strange and could give one doubts about his rational thought.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

I don't have a big problem with garments being worn as a symbol of temple covenants. My big problem is when members attribute magical powers to them. Growing up, I heard stories of garments stopping bullets and repelling fire. Any apologist will tell you that those stories shouldn't be taken seriously. I only ridicule people who make the crazy claims. I would never criticize someone who wears them as a symbol of their covenants. However, the immature boy in me finds it funny that something as sacred as the garments is, by design, so easily defiled. When I was a kid, seeing the garments in the dirty clothes hamper, I used to think my dad wiped his butt with his garments. If anyone did that to an american flag or a Bible the rednecks would want them deported.
