This is about someone defending the church, nothing more.

It is about putting it all into perspective. First, contact the bishop to find out what exactly happened. Then if it is offensive, to tell the bishop to please not let this kind of thing happen again...and to please inform the person who made the talk, not to do it again. And to see the bright side: I am missed.

Hey H.

I've been thinking about your OP since I first saw it this afternoon.

You and I have been in enough council meetings of various sorts to know that, unless you have a very sympathetic and understanding Bishop (and if he were so, he would have said/done something about the inappropriate remarks on the spot), you will get no satisfaction from the "leaders" in your ward.

You are outnumbered and outgunned. Anyone who might think of coming to your defense will likely be concerned about coming under suspicion or being thought of as "lost" too. Anything that you say or do will be seen through the lens of your apostasy.

I'm not suggesting that you do not take whatever steps you think will let you feel that you have defended your own and your wife's honour - that you should do, of course - only that you should have zero expectation that you will have a desirable effect on anyone else. Especially if there are any "why me's" in your ward.

However, I'm always the "black hat" thinker, ... and so I have scope to be pleasantly surprised by your future news on the topic.

It would serve no purpose except to further entrench each side. LDS knows his ward. Were I him I would let certain people (bishop or elders quorum president or, if he is really sly, the relief society president) know how deeply he and his family have been hurt by these viscous public accusations against him, how devastated the kids are and that they are praying that the Lord will forgive this man.

Then let the ward rumor mill do its work.

Viscous works on another level too, thick, sticky stuff is hard to clean up, just like this situation.
LDSToronto like others have said I'm sorry you have to go through this and empathize with your kids.

This whole thing is astounding, honestly I can't think of a time where I've seen someone held up publicly as a negative example, ever, in any setting. Hell even my parents treated me with more consideration when I was a teenager though I'm sure I didn't deserve it.

Are you kidding me?

Really??????????????

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While things the OP relates may not be representative of Mormons, those things combined with Rockslider's take on the subject and things posted by those at both MAD & NOM can lead one to believe that the behavior is not uncommon. It also seems that the LDS church has more than it's fair share of Why Menians, maybe something in the LDS church makes it good cover for the residence of that planet?

And catholics are perfect. Compared with the sex abuse scandals Ldstoronto's problem sounds tame.

I don't think that H. has a clue if the bishop said anything or not to the individual. He hasn't asked. Now if he follows my humble advice and contacts him to see what exactly happened in an open and friendly way, maybe human progress can be seen.

And the horror of the ongoing Catholic abuse scandal has what to do with this?

For accuracy, you should probably have stopped at "I don't think".

We need to put life in perspective. One person makes a comment in sacrament when they gave a talk and all heck is now breaking loose. One person made a mistake and now with the pundits on the board, it is a major event that goes right to salt lake. It is just a little over board and needs a rational head like mine to put it all in perspective.
