Spurven,

Who is God?

Good Question.

Let me be the first to admit, with no pride whatsoever, that your cartoon reflects the Zeitgeist for much of America as we head into this election year.

We can only hope that the 9th District Court ruling, Bill Maher and Democrats can help make things better.

Or, perhaps, DrW reflects a view of America that exists largely, if not entirely, in his own head, that serves his own purposes, and appeals to some deep seeded need to be despised.

Leaving aside whether the raving anti-fag person represents America, I think it would be important for American theists to remember that in other parts of the world, and even in America, an increasing number of people are growing up from childhood who are a-theists, not in the sense that they are interesing in marching along the streets shouting 'God does not exist', but in the sense that if you utter a sentence in their presence that refers to some controversial issue and contains the word 'God', then in effect they respond with those two reactions evinced by a poster on this board on other occasions:

Huh?

???

Or if they were Excel spreadsheets, the reaction would be [#NAME?]. In other words, the term 'God' is not in their effective vocabulary for serious talk about the world (though obviously they have heard the word), and the theist must start effectively from scratch.

That's rather a new challenge. You can't any longer say "Look, you can see God exists if you look at the order of Nature, or read this ontological proof", and so on. The first step will be to explain what this entity you are trying to introduce into the conversation is, and in a way that makes some kind of sense, and justifies why it is useful to use such a strange concept.

That will not be easy to do.

Hi, Ceeboo,

In case you have not been keeping up with REAL TIME, Bill Maher has been giving the Catholic Church a bit of a pass lately as he has focused more on Romney and the Mormons.

If you think that the LDS Church comes off looking bad on this board, you really ought to check out Bill Maher.

And I can pretty much guarantee that the show is now safe for Catholics at least -- until - the elect---- wait a minute --- .

Santorum just beat Romney in three States and Santorum is, well, he is a Catholic.

As you were.

Maher is a complete and total idiot.

If you think that the LDS Church comes off looking bad on this board, you really ought to check out Bill Maher.

Maher is still a complete and total idiot.

Maher remains a complete and total idiot..

And, Maher is an idiot.

Hoops,

I have lived and worked in Europe for many years, and have spent a lot of time in Norway, Denmark and Sweden.

When we lived there, we did not feel despised, We enjoyed it a great deal. I will have to tell you that we did not act like some Americans I met while in Europe. That is to say, we tried to fit in instead of stand out. My wife and I speak German and we lived in Germany and the UK, where our oldest son was born. We were able to fit in quite nicely.

I would not say that Europeans despised Americans. As reflected in Spurven's cartoon, I would say that the attitude of many Europeans towards many Americans (especially those of the Religious Right Republican persuasion) was more akin to that of an exasperated adult dealing with a somewhat immature and well armed juvenile.
