BCSpace and Official Doctrine--A Few Questions

Post by _consiglieri »

I just saw BCSpace's new signature line which he touts as being the Official Church Stance on what constitutes Official Church Doctrine:

With divine inspiration, the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles counsel together to establish doctrine that is consistently proclaimed in official Church publications.--Official LDS Church stance on doctrine.

Now that we at last have BCSpace committed to a proposition, I have some questions maybe he can answer:

1. Why is the word "revelation" not mentioned anywhere in this definition? Joseph Smith was big on revelation--the modern-church; not so much. Is there any indication this was how Joseph Smith viewed doctrine as being established?

2. Why do fifteen men have to "counsel together"? What are the counseling about? Doesn't God just reveal this sort of thing anymore? (See question No. 1)

3. Isn't this misleading? I mean, the First Presidency and the Quorum of Twelve Apostles haven't "established" any "doctrine" for over a century.

Looking forward to any light you can shed on this, BC.

All the Best!

I'm pretty sure that the statement means that the fifteen established the correlation department's guidelines for doctrine. From that point, the vetting of publications for "correct doctrine" is left to the professional staff, not the prophets, seers, and revelators.

Yay, my favorite bcspace topic. Tells us again, bcspace, how it is that saying "X is in Y" entails that "everything in Y is X".

Finally, my quote is no longer in his sig line.

Everyone needs to keep in mind that bcspace' opinion on what is official church doctrine is only his idea as he presents it. No one need consider that he speaks with real authority and he certainly doesn't represent the evolving Mormon religion.

I think most antis here do a better job representing the church than bcspace does. He presents things from his own narrow point of view and Joseph Fielding Smith would never approve of him. We all know this to be true. I hope that less informed readers realize this to be so.

As long as he doesn't add a disclaimer as to which parts aren't official.

We could sit here and quote horrible statements made by Mormon apostles and prophets since the earliest days of the church and those are the statements that will ever live on. Bcspace's statements are simply Internet fodder that will not have any real impact or lasting effect. He doesn't represent the church.

I was told a long time ago that the Catholic bishops get together in the Vatican when the Pope dies. They all discuss who they think should be the next pope. I thought, "Gee wiz, they sure don't know a thing about revelation like we do! Lucky for us, God calls our prophets."

I also remember learning about how the Catholics came up with the Trinity doctrine. I was told they sat in council and discussed it for a long time. I remember thinking, "Gosh, they were in such an apostasy! Our prophet just asks God. 'Tis as simple as that."
Oh for shame, how the mortals put the blame on us gods, for they say evils come from us, but it is they, rather, who by their own recklessness win sorrow beyond what is given... Zeus (1178 BC)

You had some really weird notions. Are you feeling better now?
