The Mark Hofmann Documentary

Mark Hofmann was a secret atheist/devout Mormon who forged documents to try to prove Mormonism false, and sold many secretly to Gordon B. Hinckley (who could not "discern" him or the documents). At the time, Mormons believed that the Prophets could NOT be fooled...to fool them would be like fooling God. Can't happen. Hofmann fooled them, for five years. Then, Hofmann feared he may be "discovered" and his days as a forger, in which he made over 1 million dollars, would end. So, he killed two innocent people with pipe-bombs as a way to "buy time" and prevent his being exposed as a forger. This was October of 1985.

The Church lied BIG TIME after Hofmann was arrested, first denying they knew Hofmann, then admitting they knew him but denying they suppressed documents, then pressuring the D.A. to give Hofmann a "plea deal" so Hinckley would not have to testify at a trial and explain why the Church arranged a secret loan for Hofmann.

I wrote a script for a dramatized film, which should be produced sometime this year (I'm hoping) unless the producer changes his mind. No, the producer is NOT Richard Dutcher. The producer is a producer in Los Angeles. The film is based upon a script I wrote two years ago "The Man Who Fooled God" (although the producer is changing the title to something else).

"The Mormon Murders" is about the Mark Hofmann case. An excellent book, and fun read. This book is available in most public libraries in the United States, and you can also order it from Amazon.com or from Barnes&Noble. Both hardcover and paperback versions. CBS was going to do a seven hour miniseries based upon the book, but the Church found it and send lawyers to CBS. They met for three hours, and then CBS cancelled the miniseries. TOO BAD. It would have made such a great miniseries. Unfortunately, my film (if made) will only be 94 minutes long.

This is a sleepy BBC documentary about Mark Hofmann that aired several years ago, in case you are interested. Watch out for the pop-up ads. The documentary is pretty sleepy, but it is informative for those who are unfamiliar with the Mark Hofmann story.

Maybe sometime in the near future you can screen your movie followed by a celebrity ghost story :D
