The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Spokesperson Michael Purdy states "Some have attempted to explain the reason for this restriction but these attempts should be viewed as speculation and opinion, not doctrine. The Church is not bound by speculation or opinions given with limited understanding."
I love this new Mormonism!!! Speculation, the Rules of the Game.
Yes that is our history and the reason our people obeyed the leadership at that time is because they Speculated that the teachings were correct.

The new ending to Mormon prayers and talks
And I say these things in the name of pure Speculation base upon my understating at this time yet to be altered by future events that the Church finds distasteful and reprehensible, oh and that Jesus dude too (if he is not base on Speculation), AMEN.

Does the statement not lead to the question of when prophets are merely opining with limited understanding and when they are opining with full understanding. After all, the first presidency letter of 1949 seemed to be opining authoritatively that those who thought the ban was a mere policy and not a direct commandment were opining with limited understanding if you get my drift.

I guess the new job for the Apologist will be to rank Speculation
Pure Speculation - Taught at Conference (probably good for six months)
Wild Ass Guess Speculation - Taught at any Mormon Church meeting (probably good for a week)
Heard it in Relief Society Gossip Speculation - Taught as you leave the Mormon church meeting (probably good until you get home)
My friends Bishop/Stake President Speculation - Taught by FARMS, MI, FAIR, SUNSTONE, etc. (probably good until they publish their paper, book, pamphlet, etc.)

I wonder if 10% tithing on your Gross is speculation?
I wonder if attending the Temple is speculation?
I wonder if the ban on Marriage between same sex individuals is speculation?
I wonder if the Word of Wisdom is speculation?
I wonder if supporting your Mormon leaders is speculation?
This is great! I speculate that I believe in the teachings and doctrine of the Mormon Church.

I'd like to bear my testimony, that I speculate that the church is true. I speculate that Joseph Smith is a real Prophet. I speculate that the Book of Mormon is true. I speculate that Thomas S. Monson is a real Prophet of God. I love my mommy and daddy, and my brothers and sisters. In the namecheezchristamen.
May as well let the whispering begin, maybe next generation will actually buy into this speculation BS.

The Prophet is the only person who is authorised by God to speak for the Church in all things. When did Michael Purdy become Prophet?
First: The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.
In section 132 verse 7 of the Doctrine and Covenants [D&C 132:7] the Lord speaks of the prophet—the president—and says:
“There is never but one on the earth at a time on whom this power and the keys of this priesthood are conferred.” 14 Fundamentals of Following the Prophet by ETB

I have it on good authority that Tommy is out delivering Pies to Widows. As such anyone who so desires can speak for the Mormon church and establish its doctrine.
Mmmmm, PIE.

The OP made me think about ending talks in the name of Jesus Christ. It is such a standard practice I never really considered what it meant. What does it mean to "say these things in the name of Jesus Christ"? It actually makes a ton more sense to end your talk with "I say these things based on my own theories and opinions, Amen."
