I'd like to thank the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for vastly speeding up the availability of legal gay marriage in this country through their involvement in prop 8. :D

Gay is the new Black...

It won't be many more years before The Church is issuing a statement explaining that we don't know precisely the reason for barring openly gay members from full fellowship in the Church.

As the Official Speculation Spokesman for the Mormon church I can not deny this statement nor at this time state that it is true. However I do believe you are correct.

I wonder why the opposition in Maryland seeking a referendum to overturn this statute does not instead seek a referendum requiring married couples to sexually reproduce as a condition to their marriage being legally valid.

On a related note, here is a story about a 95 year-old woman in California marrying a 98 year-old man:

I am sure there is a great deal of utility and benefit to society in recognizing this as a legal marriage, which will no doubt be fertile and provide a safe haven for the children they are likely to conceive and raise together. After all, that is what traditional marriage is all about.

And a BYU professor will speculate to the Washington post that back in the old days, marriage was supposed to be only between a man and a woman, and he will quote from the 1995 Proclamation on the Family. The church will issue a statement that they don't agree with the professor, and that the church has always stood for gay rights.
