I wonder if she looked at the mistakes I made years ago as an excuse to change her standards. Did I do the same with my parents as a younger and less experienced man?

.......

Today I will explain to my daughter that having that little piece of paper is worth whatever the price I have been asked to pay.

I don't know what you mean by the thread title, but I and my family have been truly blessed so far. However, the living gospel is not a guarantee that there will be no troubles, or that your children will always make the right choices. But I believe it does guarantee a greater likelihood of protection and certain outcomes. I can say for sure and by experience that being a good or bad example as a parent does have great influence your children.

Bcspace, whilst not wishing to disagree with you ;-) my children have learnt a lot of positive valuable things from the mistakes I have made as a parent rather than that which I did right. I have been blessed with offspring that are well rounded, compassionate and bright and who love their Father as much for his flaws as his good points.

In this case, it's a literal price, measured in dollars and cents.

Why isn't the money going to health insurance for the daughter to enable her to not face financial ruin? Or why isn't it going to fix the plumbing in the house where she lives? Or why isn't it going towards the future financial needs of the grandchild?

Nope, Its going to a 5 Billion dollar construction project.

I think it means that even with the gospel in his life, this father has no idea how to help his daughter, other than try to get her back to church. He does know how to keep a temple recommend though. It seemed the point of the article was even though his daughter is single, pregnant, and living in squalor, at least he has his temple recommend. It was a strange article.
