From The National Review Online....

Black Clergy and other concerned Christians ask Governor Mitt Romney to renounce his racist religion

On Monday, March 12, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. O’Neal Dozier and a group of concerned Clergy and other Christians will hold a News/Press Conference to publicly ask Republican Presidential candidate, Mitt Romney to openly renounce his racist Mormon Religion.

The purpose of this request is to foster and maintain good race relations here in America.

What about fostering and maintaining good religious relations in America?

The release lists verses in the Book of Mormon they deem racist and the Mormon practice of baptizing the dead of other faiths.

You can find those verses objectionable. Of course, there are plenty of other verses of the Bible, Torah, and Koran that other Americans find objectionable. You can find the practice of baptizing the dead objectionable (I certainly do). But there are plenty of other practices of other faiths that other Americans find objectionable. Declaring “God d*** America” comes to mind.

Has any other presidential candidate been greeted with religious leaders demanding he renounce his faith? In the name of national tolerance and harmony?

The release continues:

. . . we believe that a Romney Presidential nomination for the Republican Party would widen the racial divide to a point of no return, because the Republican Party would be viewed as a racist political party. Romney’s nomination would cause the erroneous view that has long existed in the minds of black people, that the Republican Party is prejudice to become a reality. Also, if Romney gets the nomination, President Obama’s super pacs [sic] will educate the American people about his racist religion and he will probably lose to Obama. (end)

Comments from Darrick:

I sure hope the national media covers this. Probably only the Florida media. Probably only the local Florida media. Probably only the local newspaper in the town where the Press Conference will be. Probably only one reporter from that paper.

If Romney is nominated, and he probably will be, 500 journalists will get a "Curse of Cain" package filled with nice quotes from Mormon leaders about "Negroes". It won't be pretty. This is the ONLY WAY I know of to pressure the Church into being truthful about is Curse of Cain past, and renouncing it without lies and equivocations such as: "Oh, golly, we NEVER taught this! Some Members may have believed it, but our illustrious leaders never taught it. In FACT...our leaders always preached against the Curse of Cain!"

Does ANYONE here in Mormon Discussions till BELIEVE that the Church doesn't LIE????

No. The purpose is to smear Romney and get out the black vote, which the racist Democrats have purchased, in time for the election. The Democrats have a vested interest in keeping blacks on the plantation and are very good at doing it.

Nope. I certainly don't deny that enemies of the Church spin the ban as racism.

You're exactly right. This is an attempt to try to use religion as a way to batter Romney. The idea the Mormon Church is racist in 2012 is ridiculous.

"We recommend that you marry someone of the same racial background generally"

Is the current advice taught to youth about how to select an eternal partner.

Not racist though, right?

This is a good thing for Romney and the church. It will give Romney an opportunity to explain the black priesthood ban was divinely inspired. BC Space can help him with his speech.

Actually, the advice is "we recommend that you marry someone of the same racial, social, and economic background generally, and always the same religion."

Bold emphasis mine.

Frankly, as a parent, this is sound advice. When you marry someone, there is a lot of adjustment. There are a lot of differences between two people, even when there are similarities in economic and social backgrounds. It makes it even harder to adjust when there are differences. The brethren are not saying that you can't marry someone of a different culture. They are simply saying that there will be more adjustment with that type of relationship, and I agree.

And it is of no surprise that they council to marry someone of the same religious background.

Liz, so if your white American daughter pitches up with a black Slavic Mormon with whom she is very much in love are you going to counsel her about the dangers of marrying someone of a different racial background generally? (the advice doesn't mention culture, i think you are just speculating that this might be what it means because it becomes more palatable that way).

If he's a lot smarter than she is will you counsel them about the dangers of marrying someone of a differing intellect level?

If he's a lot richer than she are you going to counsel them about the dangers of mixed marriages in terms of economic status?

Just to nitpick, the exact quote is

"We recommend that people marry those who are of the same racial background generally, and of somewhat the same economic and social and educational background (some of those are not an absolute necessity, but preferred), and above all, the same religious background, without question”

The racial issue is listed as a separate issue from economic, social, and educational, and is given more emphasis (The same racial background vs. somewhat the same economic, social, and educational). It was from a quote from Spencer W. Kimball from the 70s. It is very outdated in 2012 and should be junked. Interracial marriage isn't an issue today like it was in the 70s. Marriage is an important decision, and different backgrounds can make it more difficult, and these are issues that should be discussed with each other, parents, and other trusted sources (not old guys they've never met). The bigger problem is old white guys in Utah injecting themselves into very personal and private decisions, such as who a person should fall in love with and marry, and it is all based on their white-american-utah upbringing.
