Mormonism 101

Last week the LDS church put up a website, called Mormonism 101 to answer questions frequently asked by reporters. One question asks if Mormons believe they will become gods. They say the answer is no. They also asked if Mormons believe they will get their own planets. Once again they answer with a no. Why is it then that on the church's own website it states that one of the blessings of exaltation is "They will become gods (see D&C 132:20–23)"? Clearly they are trying to cover up the truth (once again) to appear more mainstream.

Oh really? Can you quote that part please? I can't seem to see it.
They also asked if Mormons believe they will get their own planets. Once again they answer with a no.
But did you read the last sentence? Is the answer then "no" or is the answer "no, it's not doctrine"?

From Mormonism 101: "Latter-day Saints believe that God wants us to become like Him. But this teaching is often misrepresented by those who caricature the faith. The Latter-day Saint belief is no different than the biblical teaching, which states, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together” (Romans 8:16-17). Through following Christ's teachings, Latter-day Saints believe all people can become "partakers of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4)."
From LDS.org (from Gospel Principles Chapter 47:Exaltation):
"2.They will become gods (see D&C 132:20–23)."

K&J,
The responses are intentionally vague and can be interpreted in a variety of ways. President Newsroom R. Bulletin is wise. Just pay your tithing and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
We are Mormons and becoming more and more like any other garden variety Christian church every day.

Exhibit A of intentional ambiguity.
Do Mormon women lead in the Church?
Yes. All women are daughters of a loving Heavenly Father. Women and men are equal in the sight of God. The Bible says, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). In the family, a wife and a husband form an equal partnership in leading and raising a family.
From the beginning of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints women have played an integral role in the work of the Church. While worthy men hold the priesthood, worthy women serve as leaders, counselors, missionaries, teachers, and in many other responsibilities— they routinely preach from the pulpit and lead congregational prayers in worship services. They serve both in the Church and in their local communities and contribute to the world as leaders in a variety of professions. Their vital and unique contribution to raising children is considered an important responsibility and a special privilege of equal importance to priesthood responsibilities.
Not a single mention of all those positions that women cannot hold.

It's published in the D&C and other places, so
it is doctrine that we can become gods. But the denial that it's doctrine is published too, so it's also doctrine that
it's not doctrine that we can become gods. I love the plain and simple truths of Mormonism.

There are two classes of things taught in LDS circles. There are all the things that are shared with each other. Some of those are rather private. Then there is the second and somewhat more limited class of things which can be shared with outsiders. Those things are called doctrine. Its important to know which things are doctrine because you do not want to discuss some things with outsiders.

Do Latter-day Saints practice polygamy?
No. There are more than 14 million members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and not one of them is a polygamist. The practice of polygamy is strictly prohibited in the Church. The general standard of marriage in the Church has always been monogamy, as indicated in the Book of Mormon (see Jacob 2:27). For periods in the Bible polygamy was practiced by the patriarchs Abraham and Jacob, as well as kings David and Solomon. It was again practiced by a minority of Latter-day Saints in the early years of the Church. Polygamy was officially discontinued in 1890 — 122 years ago. Those who practice polygamy today have nothing whatsoever to do with the Church.
I don't see how they can say this with a straight face when there are men who are sealed to multiple women. Mormons believe these men will have all of their wives when they are in heaven. The only thing that has changed is the venue in which members are allowed to practice polygamy.
