Priesthood & Priesthood Authority Lineage

Does anyone think that god (assuming such a being, with super powers) could not do what a man, woman, or child asks of god that is consistent with that god's will? If so, how could the Mormon god have appeared in the grove and give answers to JSJr, who did not have priesthood handed down through Peter? If that god granted the requests of JSJr, no priesthood lineage at the time, just a 'sincere' request, what prevents that god from doing so with other human beings who are making a 'sincere' request outside the context of Mormon investigation?
Does anyone think that god would withhold a request consistent with that god's will simply because the one requesting it has not been 'ordained' by someone in some Mormon priesthood chain? Why? How do you reconcile that with the claim that god is a merciful and just god? How do you reconcile that with the assertion that god is no respecter of persons?
If you believe that god would not withhold such requests solely because the human making the request does not 'hold the priesthood', then please explain what efficacy (if any) you see in the 'priesthood' except it being a male-only club within certain religions, such as within the Mormon church, and a co-ed subset in other religions?
