When choosing new apostles, the Brethren usually choose their relatives (by blood or marriage). So, why was Uchtdorf chosen?

Could have been a trial run for an Apostle of color. I think it was successful since he is my favorite Apostle. He has spoken about love for the other. It's like he has different priorities. I don't think any of his speeches have involved money accumulation efforts.

He was certainly never super-rich. He was an airline pilot for a long time, and I'm sure he probably met some of the Apostles when they flew to Europe. I see no blood or marriage connection with the other apostles living or dead. He is truly unique among the Twelve.

He was added to appease the whiners that apostleship is from the good ol' boys network, and that there are no foreign apostles.

Rather than shocking the white tithe payers(who carry the church) with a brown apostle from Mexico who is named Elder Jose N. Sanchez , they brought in a foreign white guy.
