Because Mormons are ashamed of their beliefs. If they weren't they'd proudly proclaim their belief in all those things that outsiders find strange, instead of hiding them or whitewashing them.

Holland was certainly ashamed about the Strengthening Church Members Committee; Temple oaths; Joseph Smith's attempts at treasure seeking.

Mormon doctrine is like a tootsie pop..... No one ever really knows what it is or isn't.

In my experience, it's because it's a cult. As a cult member, you are conditioned to always make the best impression for the church. Instinctively, you know what beliefs normal people will find weird, so you lie about them.

All the ETERNAL TRUTH of Mormonism can be found at

(loc.gov) or*** at

(LDS.org). You have to sort out what is and what is not.

At what point will these three decide consensus is not possible and excommunicate each other.

The better question is why is it so hard to take the Church at it's word? The doctrines are whatever it teaches and disseminates. It's just common sense that most apply to any other organization, including other churches, and what the Church happens to say about it's own doctrine; whatever it publishes.
Because Mormons are ashamed of their beliefs. If they weren't they'd proudly proclaim their belief in all those things that outsiders find strange, instead of hiding them or whitewashing them.
The Church itself still teaches the doctrines of plural marriage and the Divinely appointed Priesthood ban. Such doctrines are visible in it's own publications freely available on it's web sites.

Bc,
I think it is because of the contradictions on what is taught now vs what was taught. Look to the priesthood ban as it was taught vs the most recent press release.
The whole we wave our hands and the problems go away doesn't work for rational folk, but only for those drinking the kool-aide.

The church hems and haws and outright lies about the doctrines of deification and the doctrine of each priesthood member creating his own worlds. They must be ashamed of that doctrine.
