FAIR and the Best Press Money Can Buy

FAIR is apparently now paying for press releases describing how objective they try to be.

The MDD thread is here:

http://www.mormondialogue.org/topic/57404-fair-strives-to-be-objective/page__st__20

The SF Chronicle "article" in question is here:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2012/03/31/prweb9352534.DTL

Mariner's post over on MADBoard (for those who do not allow themselves to visit that place) is here:
__________________________

Come on folks.

First of all, the "article" is marked as a press release. It is on PRWeb, which charged me an arm and a leg for releasing my "news" last time I used them. (Check out <www.prweb.com>).

Press releases are not exactly considered objective sources of information. They are, in fact, a not-so-subtle form of paid advertisement.

Secondly, the title of the article is: Mormon Apologists Strive for Objectivity Says President of FAIR. The article goes on to admit that FAIR does not actually achieve objectivity (see below).

At least Bro. Gordon is honest enough to admit that FAIR is biased in his following statement quoted in the article.

"I will admit we have a bias," Gordon said, explaining that FAIR members believe that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is really the ancient Church of Jesus Christ restored in the latter days through Joseph Smith. However, he further explained that in defending the Church, FAIR members strive for an objective approach to the evidence and answers based in the best scholarship available.

So, all that this "newspaper article" really demonstrates is that the LDS Church can afford the best press money can buy.

________________________________

My personal take is that the whole thread is hilarious. The OP gushes as if this "article" were an op-ed piece from a well know liberal critic. Aside from Mariner, the posters there have apparently not tumbled to the fact that this was a paid press release by FAIR. I love it.

Now - back on my head.

Like much else in their religion, our faithful friends apparently believe that it is real, or at least want to believe that it is real.

After all, it is real in that it is a paid placement that cost somebody some real money.

It must be embarrassing for Gordon to have to pay for self promotion because the Church is rapidly distancing itself from his organizations.

Soon FAIR will achieve the same standing within LDS Mormonism that the FLDS currently enjoys...

"No Sir, they are nothing to do with us..."

From that thread:

Wiki Wonka wrote:You state that we should "instead" aim for "objectivity." There are NO objective conclusions.

I guess Wonka's conclusion about objective conclusions is not objective?

This cracks me up from that thread:

The anti-mormon will claim that this debunks the Church and is "good" evidence against it's claims. Problem is, that this is a false anti-mormon narrative and abuse of the facts. There is little to no evidence that the found fragments are actually pieces of "the" scroll Joseph said he took the Book of Abraham from. We know that Joseph had many scrolls, we know he gave away most, we know that Facsimiles are plentiful, etc. Nothing at all really proves it's "the" claimed Book of Abraham. Thus, in that case, the LDS Scholar will say we don't have enough information yet to explain the data, and thus we will continue to investigate. Not only that, but then you ad the many internal and external evidences that have been discovered proving many of Joseph's Facsimile's translations, materials related to the Book of Abraham itself, etc. all of which adds to the validity of the Book of Abraham, contrary to the anti-mormon claim of "good" evidence against the Church.

Citation Needed. Love the new theories here.

They're very unbiased in the way they respond to critical historical works with ad hominem attacks against the authors. That much is clear!

FAIR might want to change their name: Foundation for Apologetics Is Ludicrous. Although they might have to pay extra for the domain faillds.com.
