Interracial marriage = a poor person marrying a rich person

Post by _DarkHelmet »

Is this doctrine, or did CNN get their information from Randy Bott?

I predict a hasty manual revision to get rid of that embarrassing piece of advice.

Surely you mean 'interlineagial marriage'...

Which manual equates interracial marriage with a poor person marrying a rich person or an uneducated person marrying a person with a PhD? The CNN report didn't say.

Because I'm pretty sure there's plenty of education disparity among the GAs and their wives. There's probably at least a few PhDs married to women who only have high school diplomas.

In which case they aren't following the counsel that is given to every young man, to avoid marrying young women who are not of:
The same race
The same intellect
The same wealth
The same social standing
The same religion

See Aaronic Priesthod Manual 3: Lesson 31 'Choosing an Eternal Companion.

So you mean this?

“We recommend that people marry those who are of the same racial background generally, and of somewhat the same economic and social and educational background (some of those are not an absolute necessity, but preferred), and above all, the same religious background, without question” (“Marriage and Divorce,” in 1976 Devotional Speeches of the Year [Provo: Brigham Young University Press, 1977], p. 144).

If all they wanted to do was recommend that you marry someone with a similar background as you they could have done that easily without mentioning race. Race often isn't an indicator of differences. For example you could easily marry someone who is a different race than you but who grew up in the same neighborhoods or went to same schools or just has a similar background.
