If it IS a religion, you'd better be careful how you refer to atheists in the future. Religion enjoys a privileged status, and we can deflect criticism just by crying "religious persecution!"

Why is it when some religious people want to insult atheism or atheists they accuse it of being a religion? I'm not asking rhetorically, I want to understand the thought process behind it.
